Ignition Timing And 97ron

Recommended Posts

Guest shiftyshuffle

just bought myself an h-reg standard 1.6.

in the service history there is mention of the timing being retarded/advanced (can't remember which) to aid better running on regular unleaded (95ron).

im currently running the car on 97ron, can this cause harm to the engine ie. bore wash because the fuel might not completley ignite on this timing setting?

also if i were to use 95ron on the standard (97ron) timing, would this go the other way and cause pinking?

how bad is pinking/pre-ignition for an engine?

If the car is set up for 95ron then running on 97ron is a waste of time. It won't do any damage, but you're not getting the benefits of the higher octane fuel either.

Either run the car on 95ron and save a few pounds, or adjust the timing for 97ron and release a little more power.

As said, you're just wasting money unless the car is timed up to use that fuel. I've read on here that 1.9s respond well to higher octane fuel once correctly advanced although have no experience of this.

had mine tuned at skip browns . and they told me i should never put 95 in as they were designed for 97 , was making 106 bhp on 95 i use vpower and when they tuned it it made 116 bhp not bad for 130000 miles

i usually set the timing myself. stick in your v power and advance the timing 1mm at a time and take it for a test run . find a steep hill and go full throttle at low rpm and you'll easily hear the 'rattling' when its pinking. then just go back 1mm until it stops.

looking from the passenger side at the dizzy advance is clockwise

Having never done this, is it just a case of popping the car off, making a mark to show current posistion, undoing a (or a couple) of bolts and turning it?

Re-curve alone is only about £40 from H&H, but they are designed for modded angines, not standard.
