McPikie 0 Posted February 1, 2008 Guys, I think some s*it-kicker has put threadlock on mt TRE's they will not budge. Can I take it off at the rack end so I can get it in a vice??
jackherer 543 Posted February 1, 2008 Get some heat into it with a blowtorch.
Dream Weaver 2 Posted February 1, 2008 I had this issue, so took it to a local garage instead and paid them £50 to fit the new TRE's, rear bumpstops and something else. They said it even took them a while to get the old TRE's off using heat.
joe1joe 3 Posted February 1, 2008 yes you can but its a lot of work as u need to mess around with the inner boot, ur best bet is big blow toarch or oxyacetylene, but not much as your not ment to heat the track rod ends
JayCC 0 Posted July 5, 2008 I've got the same problem. Changing my coil springs back to standard. Two bolts snapped on me (hub carrier / strut bolt) and a droplink strut bolt. Sorted this now , went to pug and got new parts. Now i cant get the TRE to budge (the rubber has perished and all the grease has gone) Will a blow torch help me budge the 19mm nut? pete1986 2 Posted July 5, 2008 I had this problem on mine recently. I took it to a local garage to get the tracking done and monkey boys there couldnt undo it even with heat, a mate did it in the end with ALOT of effort and various techniques. It came in the end tho. gti-si 0 Posted July 6, 2008 Get the steering rack off and put the whole track rod in a vice, get some heat on it and then something with suitable grip/leverage on the TRE to shift it
PhilCTI 1 Posted July 7, 2008 I had the same problem when I wanted to put new track rod ends on the power steering rack I was fitting but couldn't get the old ones off. The rack really needs to be out of the car, and the track rod in a vice. The way Miles showed me how to do it was to cut the end of the old TRE off with an angle grinder, then you can get a ring spanner to fit round the nut and you get a much better grip on it and with a bit of welly, they normally come off. I suppose once you've cut the end off, you could also then use a socket with a long bar to get some decent leverage on it,
steve@cornwall 100 Posted July 7, 2008 I use a big stilson self grip wrench - and a BFH if needed
