Cambelt Tensioner Replacement

I need to replace the cambelt tensioner on my 1.6, how difficult is it with the engine in? With the two 11mm nuts loosened off is there enough room between the engine and inner wing to get the tensioner off the studs? How hard is it to compress the spring enough to get a new one in there? Does the engine mount bracket need to come off the block?

its not bad, the car ideally needs to be on a ramp so you can get at it from below

there is also a 16mm nut to undo on the back of the block to get the tensionner holder off

the spring cover comes right off but i dont think you will get a new spring in the kit (you dont in the peugeot one anyway)

you can compress the new spring by hand and slide the cover back onto the 11mm studs but it isnt easy

I'm a mechanical bufoon :ph34r: I managed to remove my tensioner to inspect it and put it back, so I'm sure you'll be fine. Compressing the spring was a bit of a ballache IIRC.

 

You don't get a new spring with a new tensioner. I bought one from Pug but they wouldn't let me have it seperately, you need to buy a bag of two. I should still have my spare one, so if you do wish to replace the spring then PM me and it's yours for a few quid.

Cheers guys, I picked up a new roller/backplate on my way home from work so I'm off out now to fit it, I'll let you know how it goes.

Well this wasn't that hard at all, I found the easiest way was to build the spring and alloy housing onto the tensioner and then fit it to the studs all together, once this was done I just needed to push the tensioner against the spring slightly to allow the cam plate to sit behind the tab it pushes on when you want to release the tension.

Took me about 2 hours I'd say start to finish, after I'd done that I've been pressing some wheel bearings into my 1900 uprights in preparation for converting the front end to 309 arms and shafts.
