Slight Problem With My Car..... Knocking

Recommended Posts

Spiky

i have now been out in the car after it's winter changes,

when driving, and i drive over a sudden change in gradient , i get a knock

it feels like the strut (which is brand new bilstein coilover with inserts and eccentric mounts)

i took the strut off and the bottom nut wasn't the tightest but tight, so nipped it up a touch more

but it's still the same

any ideas????

nothing else has changed on the suspension front

lower engine mount, driveshaft.

I´ve got the same problem (all of the usual suspects are brand new, subframe bolts checked) I´ll let you know after next weekend when I´ll be through with the above mentioned.

It couldn't be something to do with your new top mount rubber could it? Allowing a bit too much movement causing something to knock.

dont think so, as there is no rubber now

Mine does a similar thing - let me know what you find, mine knocks when you change gear too..

I've:!

Rebuilt struts using ne wtop mount kit - back to OE rather than Group N.

Gearbox mount - back to OE from Gp N

Subframe bolts tight

New wishbone bolts and bushes

ARB bushes

I'm going to swap out the wishbone for another to eliminate a couple more things.

Drop links - again!!!!

Could it be drive shaft?

i dont get it when i change gear,

have you tried doing tight circles in a car park?

yours is more drive train if it does it when changing gear, unless the engine is moving back into place and knocking.?

Driveshaft is 12 months old (3000miles) mind you that means nothing these days!

It basically does it when the weight is being moved around (changing gear) or going over rough ground so I think it is suspension based, Engine mounts are fine. Plus it does only from the Nearside.

Eccentric top mounts knock after a few miles.

its all to do with the bearing itself, its working 90 degrees to its intended/proper angle, result play within 40 miles of use, thats why all race dampers use the same spherical bearing but the bolt goes horizontal, if you get what i mean. Its a compromise to group a regs, fixed to original suspension pick up points

Also check for how the springs sit on full droop, a bit of play here can cause knock noises in certain situations. Also how tight is the top spring pan to the top mount ? If you have a small amount of play here it can cause knocking.

Rember with rose joints everything is mounted solidly so you tend to hear more noises especially at slow speeds. My road rally car creaks and groans at low speeds with rj eccentric topmounts, superflex bushes, solid bottom mount etc etc.

it was the bearing in the top mount, so getting a new set sent

though was out on track and did 200miles at bedford, showing high power cars that these little pugs are quite quick

Mine used to have a knock coming fron the front drivers side... turned out to be worn door pins.....

really sounded like it was coming from the engine bay tho!!
