Yimkin_FJ 0 Posted January 28, 2008 Hello all, After a period of neglect due to doing up my house, it's about time my attention turned 205 wise. I've already replaced the rad and rear drums (at last!) and about to do the rocker cover gasket, but... I get a non-replicable brief 'hesitation/misfire' usually at >50 or under acceleration at similar speed. Only happens very occasionally, but disconcerting when overtaking (!). In addition, petrol consumption (not being thrashed) is about 28mpg, usual complete refusal to idle until warm, a bit more 'stuttering' than usual and a strong smell of petrol - I'm guessing a new air flow meter (idling, hesitation and stutter?) and tune up (petrol smell) will work, but any tips welcomed! And finally, my dipstick tube has broken! Any easy way to replace/repair?
Rob_the_Sparky 9 Posted January 29, 2008 The stutter is probably part of the ignition system on its way out, worth a visual check at least to just rule out the obvious, e.g. dizzy cap, rotor, leads. Otherwise I'd let it get worse (it almost certainly will with time) then reaplce a few bits until it goes away. Could be pretty much anything in the ignition system at the moment (e.g. ignition amp, coil, leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm, plugs). Idle: Likely to be the AFM, possibly could do with a clean (this helpd on one of mine but not others). Many people swear by re-tracking but I've not tried it (guide on the main site). Could also be a non-functioning SAD... Poor mpg: probably related to poor idle as poor idle generally indiactes it is too rich.
Tom Fenton 1,542 Posted January 29, 2008 I had a similar stutter, changed a few bits such as spark plugs trying to eliminate it, in the end £20 of fresh fuel cured it, if you car has been sat around for a while then I recommend trying some fresh fuel first of all. Grim.Badger 15 Posted January 29, 2008 You could also try checking the ECU temperature sensor (blue sensor on the SAD) as if this is disconnected or faulty then the car will give many of the symptoms that you have listed. They are only £10 from GSF iirc but listed under BMW parts, or about £20 from PUG.
