To raise the compression without buying forged pistons as that will increase costs more than I currently plan to spend

That's very specific Kev.

It might help if you actually explain your design goal, which I understand as a 1700(ish)cc 16valve, high revving engine, primarily (if not exclusively) for use on track, using some or all of the key components that you already have:

- Mi16 head

- Mi16 alloy block

- 1.6 crank

- Longmans touring car ITBs

- Mi16 pistons

in conjunction with other components like different rods, but using standard and not hyper expensive custom parts.

I don't know if my description is correct, but it will help to weed out which of your current components won't work (and why) and steer you towards some clever, budget conscious ideas.

ok Rich lol

Its looking like the mi16 part are not ideal for the job. I dont think its possible to get good compression with what I have and a 1.6 crank.

Reason for going with the 1.6 crank was the small stroke giving low stresses at high revs which is where the car will spend its life and the fact I want it to be really revvy. Custom rods were planned for three reasons. I had some spare dosh, they are lighter weight so less stress on the crank, and I could specify the length to save having to deck a block (saves time and money if ever having a rebuild as I can use a standard block)

Plan was to initially create a 1.6 version to get going, then to move to 1750cc at a later date to be maximum cc for the class if I needed to (using 86mm piston liners and pistons and modified block from Miles). To be honest I could run with a 1.9 engine in the next class up temporarily as I want to join the last few races at the end of this year to shakedown the chassis and gain some experience as winning would be secondary until I do a full season in 2009

If you run new liners you'll be wanting to deck the block anyways, and it's pretty cheap too.

be interesting to see what you come up with in the end though. shame you can't use the XU7 crank it's fully counter balanced.
