1.6 Crank - Better Than We All Think?

He said 8k was always the limit for the grp a's including the works ones so maybe that Irish one doesnt have a standard crank or perhaps it will rev to 9k but only once :)

well I was hoping for it to cope with up to about 7500-7800rpm rather than 8-9k lol

Main problem is compression ratio now but thats going to take a little more research :)

well i decided i dont have the talent or the budget to race with 2 litre engines and bigger so I need to build a 1.6 varient

I need to stick with an xu engine due to the parts I have, and I have an mi16 engine so the plan is a 1.6 crank, custom longer rods to keep the TDC the same as a standard mi16, then standard head with throttlebodies. Only issue I have now is the compression of the engine is too low but once I get details of headgaskets then i can work out that aspect - fingers crossed I wont need custom pistons to start. Thats basically what i want to do to get it running, then phase two is to make it competitive as I will be up against Rover Tomcats, M3's and Vectra V6 Challenge cars.

What will you be using this car for? You say you cant keep up with 2 litre cars then say you will be racing Tomcats, M3's etc? heh

well 2 litre cars with half decent suspension are touring cars so i dont want to race them. Big barges are fair game in my view. I can do anything i like to my car just about but the production modified cars in the same class are tightly constrained but have bigger capacity engines to start with. 250bhp v6's do not scare me but 300bhp touring cars do :D

What series is this? Have you looked at the BARC South East run DMN and Tintops series? I have friends that race in them, both did the Tintops this year. Its fairly new but the grid is growing. One only has a 180bhp mk2 Golf and the others in a 170bhp Xsara and runs ok. The Golf bloke is moving up to DMN this year with a 1.8T but there are 5 classes in that. There is a 205 GTi6 that runs in class C (up to 2 litre, head free) and he runs near the class and its barely tuned at all. He reckoned it was only mid 170's. They go to brands, snetterton, lydden etc. Lydden is "only" about £135 for practise and 2 races, Brands is about £180 for the same but cheap as racing goes. Take a look at some of the results here. Dropping in a mildly tweaked GTi6 would be far cheaper than building up some hybrid especially if you need custom pistons etc for the CR

Photos of a Lydden round here, the 205 I mention is the silver one at the top, spot the ex BTCC Production 306

Series is the LMA Eurosaloons. I did look at the DMN series but I felt the LMA series catered more for how I want to develop the car over the next few years. DMN is turning into a bit of a big power series and you have no chance for overall series champion as thats Rod Birley's lol

Don't start me on him. He seems like a nice bloke but why bother even turning up? If someone gets in front of him on the first lap he just turns up the boost, annhilates them then potters round to win, gets cheered, they announce its is 600th race win or something and then onto the next one. Seems a bit pointless!

Not sure how it works points wise but I presume its broken down into the class's so you could win overall from a lower class. That 205 I mentioned has run at the front of class C the few races I have seen and its not that powerful. I want to do the tintops then maybe dmn one day as its so much better value than sprinting but age old thing, it costs more and I dont think I would want to race driving to events as well

hmm looks ok although not as many in it as dmn. Looking at the Brands results from Sept you should be able to do ok in class C,D,E, not sure which you would be. My friend in his golf on 1b's has got into the late 56's at Brands with only 180bhp and its a golf which isnt french heh plus I beat him when he let me double drive it at a sprint so it could maybe go quicker....I managed 60s on a track day (cough pit lane friend timing) which was my ever time there and on medium 48'rs and no quaife and only 168bhp and brake pedal on the floor by the end when I went quickest so I know my thing now could do late 57's. Back to the point, you should certainly be able to play with those Integras, Tomcats etc if you end up with a sorted chassis and 200bhp/ton sort of thing

Have you looked at the 2008 regs for that series? Only the Modified class can run a non standard head and that allows crazy tuning so are you sticking to 8v? lost track and off topic now heh

edit2: and standard pistons!
