Help! Black Slam Panel What Finish From Factory?

Recommended Posts

Last Legend

I'm just about to take some items to be powder coated,my engine bay slam panel is looking a bit scabby, being a stickler for getting things spot on (read anal)I'd like to get it powder coated in the correct finish-Matt?-Satin?-Gloss? all the other (newer at the time) 205 GTIs I had were a sort of primer biege slam panel this is the first one I've had with a black slam panel.

Can someone who remember what finish was one there from new,it looks like it might have been gloss but I could be wrong as even though the cars one of the last made its still knocking on 15 Years old now!

My current GTI, an ultra-early 1.9, has a satin black slam panel and has done from new. The last GTI I owned was the same. I have never seen one with gloss black. Hope that helps.

My 1600 is gloss black to match the car, so I assume it's had a front ender at some point and the repairers have seen fit to paint it

That Nicedeals website is a pain in the arse - everything I've ever ordered from them has turned out to be unavailable and they've had to refund me.

I did mine in satin black (it was a creamy primer colour before) - I used Plastikote I think from B&Q.

I can't say for definite, but I'd be pretty sure it would be satin black. The ones you can buy new will just be in black primer, hence them scratching easily.

You wouldn't believe the time I took to match the exact factory colour and gloss level for the slam panels I did for my car and that of EdP. A sort of creamy grey beige sort of colour, with around 50% gloss. I must have done around 12 test sprays before I was happy :)

Ok, thanks everyone Satin black it is!I still think I'm going to rub the old one down and have it powder coated although the place says stove enamelling is tougher.

but if you chip it, it chips like a enamel bath.

at least with paint you can touch it in
