Reprofiling The Project

Right, I'm now at a turning point and need some advice.

Need exhaust clearance for Mi16 and have been considering options, decision has been made and I'm going to bash :)

Purley on a cash conservation basis has this decision been made and I've been stood looking at the bulkhead with the subframe dropped and cant decide what bit of the bodywork needs to be modified.

Any one know how far up from the tunnel needs reshaping, I'm looking at it and thinking that maybe if I push the body back about 2" for about 6" above the tunnel then that might do. Or I would rather cut and weld, making a box for the exhaust to run in but by how much??

Does anyone know because all the info that I have managed to locate says to modify the bulkhead and not much else. I could measure but I am hopeless at measuring unless it's by eye so thats out

Any info appreciated :)

I know the decision has been made in your mind, but everytime I read your posts about this I can't help think you are making things difficult for yourself!

You'd have none of this hassle if you paid the (relatively) meagre sum to purchase a re-angling plate or a 2nd hand re-angled manifold, but you seem absolutely intent on sticking within your budget. Also, I'm guessing you have a welder since you have considered cutting the bulkhead and welding in a new section, so why not just cut and re-angle the manifold yourself?

From what I've read over the years (I guess the 8 years since I got my first 205, and you probably know how much time I waste reading up on the forum LOL!) the bulkhead modifying method will only lead to trouble (early corrosion) so to that end, why worry about getting the measurements right? Why not just bash t'f*** out it until it looks right? Don't think you need a huge difference in clearance anyway.

The sum required to purhace a reangling bracket is beyond my means as I am disabled and only have a limited income, most of savings used now buying car and some bits. I have sold some bits from my other car to fund this project but I'm afraid from where I am standing 50 or 60 quid is a huge some of money to pinch from the houshold budget, I would get a severe handbagging from her indoors if she only knew the half of it

That said, I do not feel competent enough with the mig to cut and weld the manifold so I've ruled that one out.

The welding of a box into the bulkhead I could manage as any cockups can be ground out and redone and I've done it before on a Mini so feel OK with that.

Will rustproof and paint anything that is disturbed and strengthen as I think nessessary with gussets etc so permanent damage not really an issue.

Problem is where and how much, would you say two inches would be enough tapering to zero at a line with the top of the hole that the steering column comes through ?

As far as the budget goes then I am confident that I can finish the track car on target and it will be a safe and quick motor car. The engine is good and I am going to spend what I can to make the brakes superb and the suspension acceptable for a track car. Tyres could be an issue if the Avons that are on do not come up to expectations. Got a brand new exhaust system on it BTW so good news there as only cost involved will be some wending wire. I intend to put a short piece if flexi in near the front to help stop any manifold stresses, I've got some in so no cost there, suppose I should add something in though as it will cost in the long run.

Will see how it goes. :)

Sorry to crash the thread Sutol, but I was uploading some pics of the new 'Lux I got recently and thought you might appreciate them.

Lifted.jpg

She's got 35" tyres on, with rockcrawler 4" lift leafs, 6" shackle lift and 3" body lift. It stands pretty tall. I'm 5'9" and my eyes are at bottom of window level!

By the way I'm still waiting to see the pics of your stacks!! :)

All the best,

Ben
