Standard 205 1.6 Gti Idle/fuel Ratio Set Up

Recommended Posts

Is there a method of setting up a standard 1.6 gti engine by ear?!

I understand there are a number of screws which can be tweaked including two on the throttle body, one on the AFM and one under the AFM ahs anybody got a guid of how best to set one up?

My problem is that the car ticks over at 2500rpm! I reduced the revs by turning the large screw ont eh throttle body almost all the way in but now if i rev the engine then let off the accelerator the revs drop and the stop light comes on and then the revs pick up again. i want to avoid this happening.

A mechanic mate of mine said someone has incorrectly adjusted the other screw on the throttle body (the one that orignally had a plastic cap covering it). I need to get the plastic cap otu and then i can try changing it.

Any other tips on what i should/shouldn't do?

Are all the hoses done up and no airleaks?

It does sound like you have an air leak - check the hoses and that the oil filler pipe is bolted to the manifold.

The two screws to adjust are :-

1) brass screw on throttle body - This is the one to try first - it adjusts air flow to adjust idle speed.

2) allen head screw on top of AFM (under blue tamperproof cover). This adjusts fuel mixture (at idle). You should only really adjust this with a CO meter on the exhaust. I think that anti-clockwise makes the idle fuel mixture less rich ?

I would check for that air leak first, then try adjusting the screws. P.S. Idle speed should be adjusted when the engine is warm, eg after five minutes running.

We sprayed brake cleaner all over the engine bay last night to try and find an air leak but there was nothing obvious although....

I have had a bit of a problem with my servo recently. The vaccum effect of the servo works when you press the pedal but if you press it a few times the pedal goes hard like you have no servo. I think its a hole in the diaphragm. So i suppose the inlet manifold could be taking some air through the brake servo?
