More Than One Type Of Be1 Clutch Cable?

Recommended Posts

Anthony

After snapping the clutch cable on my '89 205 GTi this morning driving to work, I ordered another one from GSF as they were the only people that could get one in same-day.

What's arrived is slightly different to the one that was on there, and clearly not the correct one for the car - the pedal end fittment is correct, and it appears to be correct at the clutch arm end, but it's completely different where it passes through behind the servo.

The old cable was like other 205 clutch cables that I've seen with the white plastic and a rubber bung that it sits in, but the new one just has a kind of angled piece of plastic and no bung, and unsurprisingly doesn't fit the servo properly.

Clearly this cable I've been given isn't correct for my car, but any ideas what it is from? Did early Phase 1 205's use a different cable to the later Phase 1.5 cars like mine, or have GSF just given me a cable meant for another car entirely inside a bag with the apparently correct part number judging from the website - I ordered T71512 listed as "205 1.6>1.9 10/83>90 (BE1 GEARBOX)"

(there is also T71514 listed as "205 1.6>1.9 7/88>91 ***" which doesn't make much sense as the BE1-BE3 changeover was in early 1990 AFAIK and hence the dates listed theoretically over both BE1 and BE3)

Any ideas before I take it back tomorrow to be greeted with shrugged shoulders?

That's a std BE1 cable, the pedal box part twists into the pedal box instead if sitting in a rubber bung as such, There was a inbetween cable I believe thou never seen it which has the early pedal end with BE3 fittings

Weve been having this problem with gsf for ages now, the BE1 cables they keep supplying us are wrong aswell, GSF do know about the problem so take it back and they should sort it!

Pretty sure when I tried to get a new Be1 cable from GSF a few years ago I had problems & then they were the same trouble getting a Be3 cable from them when I needed one for my Black GTi.

All the ones they could supply had the same angled end for under the servo as the one you got for the Be1 gearbox for both the Be1 & Be3.

Service box lists two but they are listed under Be1;

  • 2150 73 - XU AND RIGHT HAND DRIVE UNTIL DATE 19880701
  • 2150 97 - XU AND RIGHT HAND DRIVE SINCE DATE 19880701

July 1st 1988 seems quite an important date.

Ah right, sounds like mine is one of the odd BE1 cables with the later BE3 bulkhead fitting - wonder if that's the T71514 cable then?

Oddly enough, I'd never actually seen one of these "normal" BE1 cables and I've only ever seen this type that's fitted on my own car, but it's generally only been the last of the BE1 equiped cars that I've owned or worked on (F and G plates) which probably explains why I thought that the BE3 style bulkhead fitting was normal for BE1.

I had this problem 2 years ago when the end snapped off, as Miles said the Pug one is only a few quid more which I got as GSF couldn't get any at the time

GSF are meant to be getting me another in for the morning, but if that's wrong too, a visit to the local dealer is on the cards

Cheers for the help all.

Just for the benefit of anyone searching in the future, T71514 is the correct clutch cable for the late BE1 cars - consisting of BE1 pedal and clutch arm ends, and a BE3 style fitting where it goes through behind the servo :)

So would this be correct one for mine in my post below?

1989 F late BE1 box

I think I may have the wrong one?

I put a new cable on lastnight and, where the old one came from the pedal box to engine bay, it went straight down towards the subframe........... the new one goes right towards the gearbox. It sort of clicks in with a plastic bung, so I assumed it was correct, but it looks to be rubbing the cable on the body, and the pedal , for some weird reason, is right up in the air.

I have adjusted the cable up and down the thread, doesnt seem to make any difference to the pedal height.

I am at a loss.

going to get a new cable today and see what I can do.

Yup, sounds like you need the later cable like I did.

On the old cable, is it a white plastic bung that sits in a rubber grommit? If so, that's the later fitting and you need T71514

PS. If your clutch cable snapped, you have checked that you haven't lost the pin between the clutch arm and the pivot that the cable connects to, haven't you? Without that, you'll never get the clutch to feel or work right, but annoyingly they fall out onto the road when the cable snaps...
