[race_prep] My 306 Race Car Build

Just been poked on PSOOC by cybernck to put my 306 build diary on here too for some of your interests. (please excuse the lazy ‘cut-n-pasting’ of my posts but there’s a lot to rewrite so the date references aren’t quite accurate, but you’ll get the idea)

 

I’m sure some of you know of my last car, Red track spec 205gti6. (In the avatar!)

Well I’ve decided to start racing properly now so the track day 205 has gone, being replaced with a newer eligible car.

I will be competing in the Castle Combe Saloon Car Championship in 2008. Class C (1400 – 1800cc)

 

After going through the feasibilities and costs of many cars I narrowed my choice down to a 1.8 16v Peugeot 306 XS.

But finding the model spec I wanted with a decent shell etc wasn’t so easy!

But just at the right time (last July) a white 3 door non sunroof 306 gti-6 came up for sale. As it’ll be stripped right back to the shell and all new stuff including engine will be going in anyway, the model difference wasn’t a problem.

 

So a bank holiday trip down to the tip of Cornwall armed with a tent to pick it up. (The other half took some convincing that this was a great idea though!)

After a couple of weeks stored on my parents drive (Thanks!) while I cleared room on my drive for yet another pug I parked it up and started attacking it.

Out came the engine first. Which has gone to a good home in a friends 205 (Spikey).

Then I stripped out everything that isn’t vitally essential; ABS, Air conditioning, Power steering etc. And some other heavy bits that will be replaced with smaller/lighter equivalents.

Then gave it a good clean and shine up.

In the mean time I did some shopping, in the form of some throttle bodies, engine management, bucket seats and snap off steering wheel.

Unfortunately in the 306 the sound deadening in the foot wells are a solid ‘tar like’ substance stuck to the floor rather than insulation in the 205 that could just be lifted out.

 

It started looking like this…

I tried cutting it, peeling it, scrubbing it but no luck so had to melt it with a hot air gun and scrape it out.

And I chose one of the warmest day’s we’ve had for a while to do it! That was warm in there! Lol

This left me with a sticky mess on the floor. So got a rag covered in petrol and got scrubbing.

This brought it up quite well in the end.

It doesn’t look much but when I bagged it all up after and put it on the scales it came to just over 6kgs!!

All gutted and empty I then took the car down to Colin Satchel who is fitting the cage for me and sorting out the suspension and a few other goodies at the moment.

In the mean time Sandy has started building up the engine for me.

A rough guide to the spec is:

XU7J4 Alloy block engine

Custom steel rods

Custom forged pistons

Shillaber head

JRE bespoke cam profiles

Solid lifters/double valve springs etc

Sandy Brown/Colin Satchell TB set up (twin injectors)

Custom 4-2-1 exhaust manifold to match JRE cams

I think that covers it all up to now, the suspension is currently being finished ready for me to pick up the rolling shell with dummy engine fitted next week to bring home and carry on with my bits. Spraying, brakes, dash, doors and other interior stuff etc. Then will hopefully be off to maniflow to have a custom manifold made and then back to Cornwall to fit and map the engine when Sandy has finished building it.

Righto, time for an update.

 

Havn't had a chance to do much with the 306 sinse I picked it up a few weeks ago as I've been building our new kitchen instead. Woo fun! :)

 

Anyway, had a day off last week before christmas for a bit of a play so brought it out and gave it a clean, removed the rear spoiler and rest of the tar in the footwells (man that was a cold job!)

 

Also started chopping up the dash. It was 9.1 kgs when I started which was supprising.

I've not finished chopping it up yet or tidying it up but had a chance to get it in the car and offer it up in to place.

 

Can't make much out from the pics, I'll get some better ones when I'm done.

Here's a couple anyway, I'm quite happy I've managed to keep it resembeling original so far and therefore quite tidy (well it will be).

Although have found one thing, the upper gear rod goes straight through the console! lol

But should be able to make that neat and smart looking.

Unfortunately I didn't get to spend as much time as I'd have hoped to work on the car over the xmas break but I did a bit.

 

I whipped the engine out to start spraying the engine bay.

 

Found yet more of that crappy tar sound deadening in the scuttle panel area so heated that up and scraped it out. Came to exactly 1kg!

The subframe had already been removed, shot blasted and painted black. So all looks dapper in there now.

Today I'll hopefully get a chance to start spraying the interior.

Finished cutting the dash (and my arm!) in to shape friday night and started spraying/painting the interior yesterday:

That pretty much brings me up to date I think, I’ve just booked my ARDS test today as well so my ‘personal preparation’ is moving along too! Lol

Its the only place the side to side tubes would fit without hitting the cam pulley or the master cylinder or the wiper motor, etc.

Will that drivers side mount fit an iron block Colin? Do you have a jig to make another?

Also wanted to get the harnesses while I was there but they didn't have them in. And found they don't stock the Stack guages I'm after so more searching tomorrow.

 

 

Did a bit more painting today too, having to spray it in lots of thin layers otherwise its just getting too damp in the cold and not drying if it's too thick. :)
