Phono To Speaker Cable Splitter?

Recommended Posts

daveyboyblack

So electrics are definately not my strong point..... but would I be right in thinking that all I need in order to connect my head unit with 1 phono connection per speaker, to the speaker cable (2 wire)..... is a splitter type thing that splits the phono into 2 connections?

Like I said, I think this sounds really stupid, but any short/to-the-point replies are still appreciated!

the phono outs on the back of the headunit will be for connecting it to an external amp, and THEN to speakers.

to use the in built amp inside the head unit to connect to speakers, you will need either a plug to convert the cables in the cars loom into a standard plug for the stereo (deopending on make), or find out which wires on the back of the stereo are the speaker out and crimp them to the speaker cables in the car.

phonos are not generally used as speaker connectors in a car!

I can only repeat what's been said above really -

The phono (a.k.a. RCA) connections are there to take a low level signal on to an external amplifier, they won't power your speakers*

Almost all head units have internal amplifiers (mine doesn't, but it's special ) to drive your speakers, and it's the wires from these that you need to find. They will come in pairs (+ve & -ve), and the ISO standard colours for the positives are grey, purple, white and green, with the corresponding negative for each being of the same colour, but having a black stripe.

Have a look at the back of your set for these wires, and come back if you are still stuck, letting us know the make and model

Andy.

Thanks Andy, much appreciated.

I've taken a look and do have 4 wires that look the part, with 4 others (identical colour but with a black stripe) so i'm gonna presume that these are the front/rear left/right wires. Gonna wire these up tonight and give it a go!

Cheers

As with all things.... i spent almost an hour removing an original caliper so never got round to it last night.

Definately on my list to do this weekend though so i'll post back with results. My bet is it's gonna be SPARK, BANG, OUCH, SWEARING in that order :D

Good luck, and I strongly advise connecting stuff up with the stereo turned OFF. When speaker wires touch inadvertently expense and swearing usually follows.
