Body Mods In Steel

If you've seen the 4WD options thread you'll know what planet I'm on.  The XR4x4 has a track approx 2.5 inch wider than the 205 so will need either the cutting of the halfshafts (not my preferred option) or the extending of the arches. I was thinking of something along the lines of the old Zakspeed arches for the Mk2 escort but handbuilt in steel. I don't want to add vast amounts of weight but equally don't want something too flexible. My initial thought is 20 gauge. Anyone got any thoughts on this? Cutting the original away under the new metal will cut any weight addition to the minimum.

Rallye type arches should add a fair amount of width to the body so you may not need to add much more width to the body at all, as with the standard 205 track width the top of the wheel is inside the arch by about an inch so moving outwards shouldn't need such drastic work to the body.

The other option would be a Dimma or T16 replica kit, IMO the escort type arches wouldnt suit the style of a 205 at all

My problem with the Dimma or similar is purely on price. Not cheap for what is bits of plastic. I'd happily use one but my wallet won't stretch to one

Lipu from the Chop Shop likes his steel as thin/flexible as possible .
