Distributorless/wasted Spark Question

Recommended Posts

Guest Hallsy

Received my Omex mappable ignition the other day. I need to make a couple of brackets and stuff before i can fit it all, BUT i have a question about wiring the coil-pack.

The original engine is distributor based but my new gear will be using a crank angle sensor run off a toothed wheel, supplying a twin coil-pack.

The coil pack has two coils (never!!) with a pair of HT lead sockets for each coil (as far as i can tell) so i'm guessing that i need to put one pair on cyls 1 & 3 and the othres on 2 & 4?

I know that wasted spark measn u fire two cyls at a time, one on combustion stroke and other on exhaust, so the coil pack fires alternatively every 180 deg.

What is gonna be the easiest way for me to work out which cyls to put on which coil?

I don't really wanna get it wrong an ignite on the inlet stroke, blowing a flame thorugh my carbs and igniting the float chambers!!!! Not good!!

Any ideas?

Should be on which ever pair of pistons move together, could tell you when I crack open my engine but looks like the guys above know! I would expect it to be 1+4 and 2+3 though.

Sorry yeah, that was a bit thick of me!!

Anyhow, when no.1 is at TDC so will no.4 but how do i know which coil the ECU will fire first?

You set the toothe wheel up at 2 tooth gap at 90 deg BTDC so as it passes TDC the first coil will fire, so i need my plugs from thsi coil to be on 1 & 4. Just can't work out how i will be able to tell which coil fires first.

Doesn't tel me in manual, maybe i should ask Omex.

That's a bit of an oversight in the manual if you ask me. It should tell you which coil should be connected to which cylinder. Give them a call.

BTW did you get the coil from them?

Well i bought it second hand, but i;m pretty sure he bought the lot from Omex. It has Sagem on the coil pack.

Thing is, thinking about it won't be the end of the world if it fires on wrong cylinders initially.

As i said, the first spark wants to be at TDC (before depending on set timing) when 1 & 4 are at TDC. If it fires on 2 & 3 because i have wired coil wrong it will be firing at bottom of stroke on these cyls so will more than likely just stall the engine. Then i'll know to just swap the leads.

I hope!
