Guest ldryden205 Posted January 10, 2008 One of the rear wheel bearings is starting to whine. Does anyone know if its an easy job or is it a press fit like the front ones? (its a 1.9gti) do i also need to change both or just the one? cheers
Tom Fenton 1,541 Posted January 10, 2008 The 1.9 rear bearings are integral in a cast hub, you can't change the bearing part of it, so you just buy a complete hub with the bearing in, and bolt it on. Makes for a very easy job to change it, but also makes them pricy, about £25-ish last time I bought one. Unbolt the rear caliper, remove the disc, prise off the grease cap, undo the big nut (32mm I think but don't put your life on this) and draw off the old hub and bearing. Sometimes it will leave an inner race on the stub which will need getting off with a hammer and chisel. Once this is done, push new hub and bearing onto stub axle, do up nut, put the brakes etc back together and its done.
