MikeHunt79 0 Posted January 10, 2008 Failed the MOT today, numberplate light and fuel leak. The light was no problem, but I'm a little stumped on how to fix this: http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/6123/imgp0727wo8.jpg http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/7586/imgp0730cj7.jpg The middlebox is visible in the 1st pic, the hoses shown are the ones coming from the fuel tank. It's a 205 derv, so it's not gonna go up in a fireball the next time I start it up, but I'd like to get this fixed asap... Now, to me, the braided hose looks like the problem... I'm guessing the braided hose is the main fuel supply, and the other hose is the return? So what's the best way to fix this... I'm guessing drain the derv (syphon maybe?), replace the hose. Or could the hose be ok and the hoseclip is causing the leak instead?
M_R_205 5 1 Cars Posted January 10, 2008 First off replcce the hose clamp with a proper fuel one, which gives a much better fix, and if that fails simply try pushing it further on and using 2 clamps at different angels, make sure the braided line is the correct size, and not split under the braid. Paul Would someone like halfords have these proper fuel clips? Also, I've moved the hoseclip, and it look like the fuel hose has been crushed: http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/3936/imgp0736ne2.jpg Would it be worth replacing the hose? Also, the hard line goes to where I have moved the hose clip to... So I'll try 2 clips...
ORB 227 1 Cars Posted January 10, 2008 i had to change the hard line in my gti as it had gone porous. i just replaced it with rubber fuel hose.
MikeHunt79 0 Posted January 10, 2008 (edited) i had to change the hard line in my gti as it had gone porous. i just replaced it with rubber fuel hose. So you changed the metal part and the hose? Would someone like GSF sell replacement rubber hose? I've only got my push bike to get around now, so I'm limited to local places to get parts... Would plastic hose work? B&Q sell 6mm 9mm and 12mm plastic transparent hose which I can get by the metre... Edited January 10, 2008 by MikeHunt79
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted January 10, 2008 My old 205 diesel had a cracked fuel pipe in a similar place to your leak, the garage replaced it with a full length of rubber fuel hose from the tank cap to the pump & I've also done this on my GTi after the pipe had a leak when I bought the car. You should be able to get proper approved rubber fuel hose from any car spares / motor factors. They should sell it by the metre, my local one does. Don't use the stuff from B&Q unless it is rated as suitable for fuel hose or it'll just fail again imo. Graham.
MikeHunt79 0 Posted January 10, 2008 Well the b&q stuff is meant for water really - I normally use it to watercool computers... I guess oil might react with it or something... I think I'll get a few meters of fuel hose and do it properly... The less connections, the less chance of a leak, so 1 full length sounds perfect... In the mean time, I've used some copper drain wire as 2 jubilee clips wouldn't quite fit... It appears to have worked (for now), so I'm now no longer covering my drive in derv...: I then cleaned it all up and done this: Just to see if it still leaks. I'll pick up some fuel hose from GSF or somewhere like that - thanks. I'm guessing 2 meters should be more than enough shouldn't it?

That depends how much you are replacing, tank to pump on a diesel is more than two metres but fuel pipe isn't that expensive so get plenty rather than having to buy a second lot because you didn't get enough first time. IIRC I got 3m for my GTi & had a bit left over taking it right from the tank cover to the bottom of the fuel filter banjo. Graham.
