Uprated Brakes - Grooved & Drilled

I was wondering what the difference in between standard discs, drilled and grooved.

 

I know that the airflow is better on drilled and grooved over standard, thus allowing them to run cooler.

 

But in terms of actual braking ability which is better ? Do the drilled holes and grooves allow for a better bite on the pads? I'd also guess that in the wet / raining that the drilled and grooved discs would be better as they could deflect the water away, much like a normal road trip grip pattern.

drilled brakes are for show. Modern brake pads don't really produce gases like 20 years ago and they are more prone to cracking

Grooved help gases escape but are more about helping deglaze pads

So the standard "smooth" brake discs are actually better at braking then? :huh:

Grooved help gases escape but are more about helping deglaze pads

 

Grooved help to not let the pads glaze in the first place as Batfink says, so better than std ones.

Agreed. I've personally had more problems with 'upgraded' discs than standard discs, from various suppliers even with companies that charge you £300+ for just discs and pads for a 205.

 

Std discs, upgraded pads (mintex etc) and you can't go wrong especially for just a 205 :huh:

I agree, I use standard discs with uprated pads on my track car, does the job just fine.

But then the grooved discs tend to eat the pads...

I still think good quality plain discs are the way to go. If they fade, change the pad compound, or go for the next size up in brakes (266 or 283mm) :huh:

 

Look at the price of the grooved discs too, usually 3x the price of a decent quality plain disc!

Yep you can buy brembo plain disks for the 205 for reasonable money.

I've just upgraded to Brembo "max" discs..... grooved only as I also don't really believe in cross drilling unless it's proper light race car and you're having problems overheating.

 

Car should be back on the road on Sunday, driving to Birmingham to get a new exhaust the following week, and then it's going on track at Bedford on the 26th so i'll let you know how I get o with this set up!

 

Hoping that the long journey to Birmingham will be enough to bed in the pads/discs properly, does anyone have any tried and tested methods for bedding in pads and discs, if the discs are grooved?

you only need about 4, max 6 grooves - then they will work as intended and won't eat pads.

 

but those discs with 30-40 groves are really stupid :).

I'm screwed with my FTO then - its both grooved and drilled (well, dimpled really) B)

 

Had similar on beforehand and they lasted over 2 years, including 2 Europe Trips with car clubs and not very sensible driving ( :P ), driving up and down mountains and a trip around the Nuburgring.
