Opinion On Suspension Setup Please

Recommended Posts

Tom Fenton

Hello all

Been reading old posts and would like some input into the plans for my 205 Mi16 track car.

At present-

Front

205 1.9 setup, poly wishbone bushes, Spax adj dampers, -30mm springs, 309 GTI ARB, strut brace.

Rear

205 width beam. Gp A beam mounts. Std ARB. 22mm torsion bars. Spax adj dampers.

Planned-

Front

205 1.9 setup, poly wishbone bushes, AVO coilovers, eccentric top mounts, 309 GTI ARB, strut brace.

Rear

205 width beam. Gp A beam mounts. 306GTI 24mm resplined ARB, 22mm torsion bars, AVO adj dampers.

Anyone got any comments? I changed to the 309 front ARB from the standard one in an effort to stop front roll so much, this didn't really work, and made the car understeer, but I hope the stiffer springs on the AVO coilovers to combat the roll, and the rear 24mm ARB to balance it up and combat the understeer. Also the eccentric top mounts will allow some much needed negative camber on the front suspension.

Thanks guys.

Big ARB's are only really a compromise for when you need to keep soft spring rates for comfort or travel, although it may balance out with the stiffer rear ARB, you'll still be loosing a little traction compared to a setup with a softer arb and stiffer springs, I'd be aiming at dropping back to the 205 arb up front and compensating with stiffer springing.

For comparison my 306 only runs a 17mm ARB up front, with a 24mm at the rear, I just went for a touch more spring rate instead, it doesn't really understeer unless you deliberately provoke it.

I'll probably be dropping those sizes once I've the money for some suspension modifications!

Yes good point, with the coilovers at least the option of changing springs is there. Phil have you got a spring rate test rig up at your workshop? Would be nice to know what the springs AVO supply are as a starting point. Had them in my press but the gauge is too large a scale to show anything useful.

Full blown damper dyno up here Tom, spring rate and everything you ever wanted to know.

If your getting Avo's make sure there are double acting type as many of them are only bump and be pre-paired for leaks on them which is pretty common and not just on 205's, but the customer service is good.

If possible and budget allows the AST's or KW's are a better bet

Phil, interesting to know, will talk to you about it when I see you for those pads/manifold.

Miles, already have the AVO coilovers, they came at a good price, not sure if single or double, they are going back to AVO for a refurb and possibly to have the damper rods altered to allow me to use eccentric top mounts. Will see what they are like once on, don't have a big budget for the car, but hopefully they will be better than a set of very tired looking Spax adj. on there currently.
