V8Pete 0 Posted January 2, 2008 Stripping a parts car, I found this piece of tube under the wing However, after looking at several pictures on here, I noticed a lot don't seem to have it. Any idea which cars have them and which don't?
jackherer 543 Posted January 2, 2008 Thats a sunroof drain tube, so will only be fitted to 205s with sunroofs.
V8Pete 0 Posted January 2, 2008 (edited) I mean the big steel piece of pipe Like what this one doesn't have... Edited January 2, 2008 by V8Pete
jackherer 543 Posted January 2, 2008 Oh OK, I see now. I've not taken many 205 wings off but I don't think I've seen one without that part.
V8Pete 0 Posted January 2, 2008 Just had a better look through some project galleries - still haven't found another one with that tube. http://projects.205gtidrivers.com/b1ack_mi16-shell/CIMG0500 http://projects.205gtidrivers.com/pugpete-bodywork2/HPIM0193
gti_al 1 Posted January 2, 2008 Looks similar to the side intrusion bars in my doors and quarter panels. Can't see why there would be one there though
V8Pete 0 Posted January 2, 2008 Reckon they're worth chopping off and hanging onto for if/when I change the wings on my good car?
B1ack_Mi16 67 Posted January 2, 2008 This is an issue I've also been wondering about. My 1984 shell did not have it as can be seen in the pic linked to above. I thought it maybe were the newer models that had this tube, but now I've started working on a 1991 model GTi shell, and there's no tubes in place there either. Quite strange. Pic 1991 model: http://cortex.fa-s.ntnu.no/~kristian/Kuran...07/CIMG0875.jpg Very strange - that parts car was a 1990 UK import - not even an Aussie one, which I believe came with side intrusion bars. I also noticed the driver's side sill had a little extra vertical sheet near the front of the door, but the passenger side didn't. Peetypug 5 Posted January 2, 2008 mine has it here its side impact protection i think
rescue dude 0 Posted January 2, 2008 It looks as if it may be some sort of strut brace rather than side impact protection. Where it is it's only protecting the wiper motor!! As it's welded firmly to the bottom of the A pillar and the top of the strut mount i reckon its strengthening for the strut.
V8Pete 0 Posted January 2, 2008 (edited) mine has it here its side impact protection i think But not on the passenger side... Edited January 2, 2008 by V8Pete
Tom Fenton 1,541 Posted January 2, 2008 I've never seen that bar before, and have had the wings off 6 or 7 205's.
jonnie205 1 Posted January 2, 2008 This bar is a strenghening bar for the front turret. Its a form of triangulation like you would do if linking turrets to rollcage. A massive amount if load is put through the low part of the screen pillar and roof when suspesnion is loaded up and these spread that load into A post in other areas. A 205 without a cage used on rough surface will always crack lower screen pillars as do escort mk2s. NOt sure why some gti's have them and some dont tho
Peetypug 5 Posted January 2, 2008 But not on the passenger side... yeah i dont know why that is either there is no evidence that it has been removed on the pass side
Peetypug 5 Posted January 2, 2008 (edited) This bar is a strenghening bar for the front turret. NOt sure why some gti's have them and some dont tho why do they only have them on one side? surrely they would fit it to both sides if it was for added strength (or is it those daft french safety regs again) Edited January 2, 2008 by sorrentopete
jonnie205 1 Posted January 2, 2008 i am only guessing realy but it does look like a sturdy bar that would spread some load from the turret
Rob Thomson 6 Posted January 2, 2008 why do they only have them on one side? Because the engine hangs off the offside turret and not the nearside....? Speaking with my structural engineering hat on, I can't see what that tube would do for side impact protection. But I do reckon it would stiffen up the turret area quite a bit; see how it's tied into the A-pillar and the bulkhead before going forward to the turret. C_W 3 1 Cars Posted January 2, 2008 Yea, and I suppose on the other side the gearbox mount is bolted to the battery tray which is quite substantial really to be just a battery tray and that spreads the load through the 4 bolts on that inner wing. But that doesn't answer why some are and some aren't fitted with them!
Paintguy 0 Posted January 2, 2008 My 1990 1.9 has that bar, and as with the one above it looks like a tacked on addition, rather than something that was designed to be there in the first place. I also came to the conclusion that it was extra strengthening for the strut/engine mount, and that it was possibly added to later cars after they discovered it was a weak spot. Only a theory, but it might explain why it's only present on some models
