Won't Rev Above 6k

Ideas, please!!

My 1.9 8v will not rev above 6K--- So far, regapped and cleaned plugs. swapped ign. amp - swapped dizzy - even tried with a 1.6 ecu and a 1.9 ecu with diode removed- won't go above 6K B)

Now, downhill on part throttle it ent to about 6.5K indicated- put foot on throttle and it cut out - more of a total cut ot than the "bouncing" of the limiter.

Next step will be to change throttle body (and tps in right position) - I've wondered if it doesn't register WOT, or if this would even make a difference? cable is not slack BTW

possibly fuel filter or lazy fuel pump????? runs great otherwise, and pulls to 6K well in all gears

Have you had the timing checked. I had a car that held back hi up the revs and it just needed to be advanced a bit.

Have advanced timing 'til it pinked readily - still no-go above 6K B)

dont forget that these rev counters can be quite a fair bit out, and the 1.9 only revs to 6200 anyway as far as I can remember.

 

easy to check the TPS anyway B)

I had a similar problem with my 1.9 GTi 8v. Whilst driving it - in any gear - it wouldn't go more than 6k rpm. BUT, I did find that whilst in neutral it'd go to about 7.5k rpm. Does yours do this as well ?

 

Mine was believed to be a "bad engine" as it numerous things wrong. I was told by a garage that because of my lack of oil pressure the crankshaft was unbalanced / out of alignment. You'll have to excuse my lack of technical talk as I'm not particularly well versed in car mechanics.

 

Either way, I solved my problem by putting a GTi6 engine in instead. B)

If you've got a spare coil handy, put that on to rule it out - a friends 205 1.9 GTi had similar symptoms to yours (from memory it would rev to about 5-5.5k at WOT, higher on part-throttle) and we cured that by replacing the coil

I'll def try that- cheers

 

CaptainK- A quick rev in neutral, and it will indeed show about 7.5K, but I reckon that's just the momentum of the needle!

Check the fuel lines arn't blocked.

I twisted the plastic feed line once under the fuel filter when tightening it up.

That caused a similar symptom.

I had this exact problem with my 205 Gentry, it wouldnt rev past 6,000 and it ended up being the cat needed replacing.

 

No idea if you have a cat but they are the same symptoms

The breathers were BADLY gunked with mayo! The car is mainly used for 6-8 short journeys a day with my work (between 1-3 miles) and its surprising how quickly they blocked. Now revs cleanly to indicated 6.5K and has proper "bouncy" limiter rather than just cutting out dead at 6K :lol: It does take its time from 6 - 6.5K- compared to how it gets to 6k- but plenty of time to change gear now!!! A massive improvement from sorting what seemed a trivial problem.

Main problem was with the gauze in the oil filler cap, with the pipes coming from this to the throttle body and the pipe between throttle body and AFM needing clearing also. If it ever stops raining here, I will also clean out the main breathers from engine block to oil filler body and cam cover too.
