Engine Timing Issues?

Hi all,

 

I'm in the middle of turning my 205 1.6 gti into a race car and currently rebuilding the engine. Had an odd one tonight though, went to time up engine and remove cambelt but the dowel holes don't line up. Crank pulley hole is about 12 o'clock with 10mm drill through it and the top pulley is past its hole. The engine seemed to be running fine before I removed it so just wondered if anyone has had similar problems. I can put some pics up if it helps and also some pics with head off. I reckon bottom end is definately right as all pistons are in middle of block. The problem is that when I rebuild it, naturally I would time it up off the dowels but could this be wrong??? (I know in theory it can't but its bit of a strange one !

could it be that the heads had a heavy skim ?, just a thought,

are you sure that one side of the webbing on the block hasnt broken off and so you've got the timing dowel the wrong side of the webbing if you see what i mean?!

 

was ur ignition timing very retardted or advanced to counter act the incorrect cam timing?!

If the head has anything skimmed off the timing holes won't line up perfectly like they should. A heavy skim can make up to half a tooth difference.

 

With the lower timing belt covers fitted you can't get the wrong hole on the crank pulley as theres another hole in it that matches the crank pulley hole when its in the right place.

If it was running OK and seemed quick then leave it where it is. If you line it back up afterwards, you will notice a fairly large power drop due to the cam being retarded. And as a result, your ignition timing will be retarded by the same amount.

I've built loads of 205 engines before etc just never come across problem. Its about 3-4 teeth out, will try and get photos up tonight.

PS- Has anyone got their engine apart at the moment who can tell me with the timing holes lined up where the pistons and vavles are, what cycle their on. Think my bottom ends right, all pistons are level.

maybe being a bit daft here, but don't they only line up 1 revolution out of 4 ?

1 of every 2, hence why you always turn an engine over twice after fitting cambelt, thats ratio between crankshaft and camshaft.

The cam and crank were obviously not lined up when the belt went on although at 3/4 teeth out, I'm supprised that the car ran at all as that would surely have caused some valve and piston contact???

Does the crank pulley have a bonded rubber section with the timing hole outboard of the rubber?

If so the rubber may have slipped round and youll need a new pulley.

No, the crank pulley is all metal so it can't have slipped like you suggest.

Are you sure that the stock pulleys have been fitted or are they different? how about a couple of pics?
