Be3 Gearbox And Clutch Change

Recommended Posts

john-melbourne

Hi Guys,

The gearbox needs replacing on my 1.9 gti, just wondering how long this generally takes, obviously fitting a new clutch at the same time? My local garage has said it will take 7 hours at a cost of £240 is that about right?

John

book time is a bit shorter than that but not by much TBH!.

how confident are you with the spanners?

A decent set of sockets, a hub nut socket and breaker bar, and a clutch alignment tool is all you need B)

it depends, i can have a box out on the floor in 40 mins then back in about 1 hour. 7 hourse seems a lot but £240 aint too bad if that is supplyin clutch

I can do the clutch in just under 2 hours on my driveway. It's really not difficult tbh.

Thats very impressive! I managed 1:45 but that was the six or seventh one I did, my first one took much longer, 8 hours plus.

just underneeth first, oil out, hub nuts off, pinch bolts out, support bearing off, shafts out, gear linkages, flywheel plate bottom bellhousing bolts, then on top, battery out, afm and pipework, starter, top bellhousing bolts, cable, gearbox mount, back underneeth and drop it out. Its easier with a ramp and a propper air gun to get hub nuts off

3 -4 hours ( I don't possess a clutch alignment tool or undo the hub nuts) - get a mate to help with the lifting, tea brewing etc. and it's a piece of cake!

3>4 hours should be the norm with a few problems thrown in along the way, The last 306 I've just done had the D/S rusted into the Hub's to add some time to it

BE3 or BE1 box? If a BE3 it's worth changing the cross shaft bearing's while it's out as this helps make the clutch nice and light

Its a BE3 box, is the cross shaft bearing a dealer part or can it be bought from gsf?

Dealer only IIRC, not expensive though.

Under £2.00 each, The hard part is removing the pin from the arm as these tend to rust in solid so a good heating sorts that out
