Removing Sump With Too Much Sealant!

Hi Everyone,

 

I started stripping my mi16 today ready to put on a baffled sump. However it seems that the sump that's currently on there has been put on using a ton of sealant and I can't get it to budge!!

 

Has anyone got any suggestions on how to remove it?

 

Currently i've tried getting a stanley knife to try to cut into the sealant and at least start seperating the sump from the spacer/block. I've also tried to wedge a flathead screwdriver in but to no avail!

 

Is there any chemical stuff that would breakdown the sealant to help?

 

I have absolutely no idea why they didn't just use a gasket (it doesn't even look like there's one present!) and decided to completely overuse the sealant.... but i'm in despearate need to remove it but after an hour of trying I had to give up today!

 

On a more positive note, I did manage to get some of my Xmas projects started.... and have picked up some lovely grooved discs ready to go on

 

Any suggestions welcome!

i'd try thumping it with a rubber mallet. presumably you only need brake the seal?

i'd be careful trying to prise it off as you may damage the mating surfaces

I think I used a sharp scraper last time, and I refitted with a gasket I bought from pug, then realised that all XU gaskets are the same and GSF do sell them.

 

bear in mind that alloy sumps are fitted with goo and steel with gaskets, dont overtighten them either or it will leak

Is it a steel sump with spacer plate?

 

If so are you trying to split the spacer from block with the sump still on?

 

Sounds like a stupid question but you never know!

Yes although the parts CD does show a gasket for the 1.9 Mi16 sump.

- It's the standard mi16 ally sump, with the space plate between this and the block. And fortunately i'm not trying to free the space from the block, only the sump from the spacer!

 

Welshpug, you mention that ally sumps don't use gaskets.. is that definately the case? If so then maybe this one is fitted properly... it's just that I can't even start to seperate the sump from the spacer.... it's so frustrating!

Maybe it's because it's dark outside, I should try again on the weekend!

stage two of the mallet attack might involve laying a length of wood across the face of the sump (just below the joint) and thumping it with a heavier mallet or even a hammer - obviously need to be careful though

 

seems strange that it's glued on so well!

I just get the sump in the courner and lever it down with my large screw driver, this just breaks the seal enough for it to come off, but some can be a bit*h

The alloy and Tin sumps I always use sealent as it makes sump removals easy and quick as the gasket's weld themselves on and still leak

Easy to seal up anyway when you haven't got a 10 ton air con compressor attached to it.

And the sump is..................... OFF!!!!! Amazin what some gentle persausion with a big hammer and chisel will do. Luckily the spacer plate seems to have survived unscathed!
