Quick Question

As above really - for those of you running a QEP exhaust manifold re-angling plate on your Mi conversions, did it arrive with gasket/s?

 

Mine didn't, and before making other arrangements just wanted to check if it should have? Thought I'd ask on here as it's understandably not the best time to expect a reply from contacting Matt or QEP direct. I only have the engine crane for a limited time (thanks Fletch :)) and am keen on dropping the Mi in with the exhaust manifold and re-angling plate attached, as it seems much easier.

 

Thoughts appreciated

You can fit the manifold with the engine in the car, obviously a bit more awkward, but it is possible.

I don't remember it coming with a gasket, but it's been a while since anyone I know has ordered one.

 

I don't generally tend to use gaskets much these days anyway, prefering instead to use Loctite 5920 high-temp sealant which seems to do a very good job and has sealed mine and friends manifolds for thousands of miles successfully - Hellfrauds do it if you're not sure where to get it from.

Right, resurrecting this one (never simple eh :)) I've now got some of the sealant you mention above Anthony, got all set up to fit the angling plate and thus exhaust manifold and have a couple of questions (mods if you'd like me to start a new topic that's fine):

 

1.) I have 9 special chamfered bolts with corresponding washers in my manifold angling kit from QEP. As, by it's very nature, the angling wedge is thicker at one end than the other ( ;);) ) I would expect to see 4 longer bolts and 5 shorter ones. I have 9 bolts of the same length and before any sealant/gasket is taken into account this is how it all looks:

I am assuming there is not enough thread on the bolts at the thick end of the wedge in the pics above to keep the manifold attached to the engine properly, a problem that will get worse once I apply sealant/gasket?

 

As I'm trying to make the most of my spare time over xmas, I could use four longer ordinary bolts we have knocking about (non chamfered with regular washers) at the thick end of the plate, however would this cause a problem? I assume there is a reason the washers look dished as they do below?

Can/should I use ordinary bolts for the longer application or do I need to wait for QEP to reopen and try and get longer chamfered versions?

 

2.) Second question is just around your method of using sealing instead of a gasket Anthony - having had a practice, have you got any tips for how much to apply? If I apply too little I presume it won't seal adaquately, too much and it spreads and causes problems.

 

Also how tight should I look to tighten the bolts - with a traditional gasket I presume I can just tighten until it sits tightly against the gasket. With sealant I'm worried past a certain stage it will start to splurge out into the ports etc. and cause issues?

 

Sorry for lots of questions chaps, this is by far the most ambitious thing I've undertaken, and I don't have masses of time to get it completed (borrowed engine crane etc etc). Not in the first instance on the forum I'm sure, but without the help and tips I get on here it wouldn't be possible so thanks :)

I had exactly the same problem with my wedge about a year ago. Add 2 gaskets to the party and you can barely see any thread. I didnt have time to wait for bolts so ended up using O.E studs and nuts which wasnt ideal due to the angle but worked, and dont seem to have loosened over time.

Cant really say what you should do, but studs have worked for me.

The only one I used a just fitted all new bolt's with mine, It's still going strong now with no leaks.

Ok cheers for that, sounds like OE it is then :) take it you both used ordinary flat washers too?
