sutol 0 Posted December 13, 2007 Anyone know how the rear compensator works as I would like to fit a hand valve inside the car. would this entail much work to eliminate the standard compensator ? Ples.

Tom Fenton 1,561 Posted December 13, 2007 1600 or 1900? Both use different systems.
Pugnut 9 1 Cars Posted December 13, 2007 the 1.9 uses 2 preset PRV's . a fixed pressure restriction. one on each line to the rear. the 1.6 has one canister fixed on the n/s chassis leg at an angle. inside this canister is a ballbearing/piston arrangement which will roll forward as the braking force increases , shutting down the fluid to the single rear line. on a 1.6 if you load (or lower) the rear the angle of the canister increases thus giving more braking power to the rears . kind of a load compensator . as stated there is no load compensation on the 1.9's

Pugnut 9 1 Cars Posted December 14, 2007 Mine is a 1.9 so does this mean that I will need to remove the PRV's before being able to use an adjustable system? yes . you would only be able to reduce the pressure lower than the preset compensators on a 1.9. sutol 0 Posted December 14, 2007 yes . you would only be able to reduce the pressure lower than the preset compensators on a 1.9. Daft question really, I remember now that the 1.6 has one on n/s front wing which would be easy to cut out of system but don't know where they are on 1.9. Are they in the calipers? All Praise The GTI 3 Posted December 14, 2007 (edited) under the car next to the sills infront of the rear wheels. mine are being removed this weekend hopefully by running new lines inside the car straight from mc to caliper. (as i run gti-6 brakes) Edited December 14, 2007 by All Praise The GTI
Pugnut 9 1 Cars Posted December 14, 2007 they are hexagonal . about 3 inches long and 3/4 inch dia . and can be found next to the fuel tank before the lines reach the rear beam . on a 309 they are in the engine bay. (or have i got that the wrong way round?)
welshpug 1,675 Posted December 14, 2007 naah your'e correct, in the engine bay just under the coolant expansion tank in a 309.

Are they in the calipers? Is it the 106 that has them in the rear cylinder? Years ago we used to put the Mk 1 Mini compensator in the car (ball and spring) you could then easily alter the angle of it to increase or reduce rear brake effort. Mostly reduce. welshpug 1,675 Posted December 14, 2007 yup, most if not all 106's and 306's have the integrated into the rear wheel cylinders.
Pugnut 9 1 Cars Posted December 14, 2007 if you are sourcing 1.9 compensators be aware that there are 2 different types which are identical except for a letter stamped on the side . the only difference between them is the pressure setting. Be sure to always fit matching pairs as it could obviously lead to uneven rear braking. here you go : either marked E or F 4861 45 02 PRESS REGULATOR REP : F - INJECTION AND XU9JA UNTIL SERIES 1811241 EXCEPT (E) 02 REP : F - INJECTION AND XU9JA AND (E) UNTIL SERIES 1831920 4861 49 02 REP : E - INJECTION AND XU9JA SINCE SERIES 1811242 EXCEPT (E) 02 REP : E - INJECTION AND XU9JA AND (E) SINCE SERIES 1831921
