1600 Brake Upgrade - Discs And Pads

Recommended Posts

McPikie

OK, I am wanting to up the stopping power on the 1600. I don't want to go upgrading calipers and hubs and the like. I have some decent new brake fluid, think it's dot 4, and was wondering if the "grp N" discs and pads on fleabay are decent??

Or should I be aiming more towards mintex??

In my experience, the usual cause of distinctly underwhelming 1.6 brakes is the calipers themselves, and swapping to 1.9 calipers with some reasonable pads reaps massive benefits. If calipers are the cause of your underwhelming brakes, then I'm not sure that you're going to get satisfactory performance regardless of what pads you run.

How do I check if it's the calipers then Anthony? Just re-con them and see if they get batter?

I know my N/S/F disc is warped more than my sense of humor, so that deffo needs swappping

Standard discs and some decent pads bedded in properly, mintex 1144 would suffice for the road. Would be worth wire brushing all the muck off your calipers and copper slipping the sliders at the same time plus the new brake fluid as you suggest

I always prefer the bendix Calipers over the Girling, Maybe it's the weight thing but the Bendix when in tip top condition are great

Group 'N' disc's on Ebay I would say are just standard disc's, it's a very misleading word by all accounts.

Some decent pads (DS2500, 1144's or RS4's) even on std Brembo disc's are fine

Crazy-legs!

Sorry to hi-jack this thread, but i am also in the process of up-grading my 1.6 brakes. I am goin to treat her to a new set of calipers, to go with the 40 groove disks ive just purchased and was wondering if it worth getting some 1.9 calipers instesd of 1.6? seeing as i am goin to buy some new ones anyway! any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Cheers, Marc.
