Standard Front Springs

Recommended Posts

TheLarneMan

I want to replace the front springs (they are currently Pi -35mm springs) on my 205 with standard items. My car is a special edition GTI 1.6, so it is early 1990.

I contacted my local Peugeot dealer to get a price but he told me there were 4 different types of springs! He wasn't able to tell me how they differed - except in price. They ranged from £39 each to £87 each. I always thought there was only one type of spring for that car.

Does anyone know what the difference is or which type of the 4 springs I need?

Cheers.

Yes, there are many different of types of springs for what seem like the same car. The springs are ID'd by the paint marks on them, for example 2 red 1 yellow mark. I tmight be worth asking a few members on here with standard 1.6 GTi springs that are of a similar age to your car to ID their springs and go from there.

wouldn't the chassis number tell the main dealer which would be the correct coil spring ?

Not on the older cars no, the dealer system has only been able to pinpoint specific parts from the chassis number from cars made from the mid-ninties or so. You may be lucky though...

i reckon if you went to a motor factors, instead of main dealer, they'd only offer you one type of spring

Whilst taking the front suspension off my 1.6 GTi phase 2, there were 2 yellow paint marks on them. and the ride height seems standard.

So there was four different types of springs? Wonder why they changed them so many times?

A stab in the dark guess, but I reckon the 4 types would be.....

1 - for all models except the ones below

2 - Diesel

3 - 1.6 GTI*

4 - 1.9 GTI*

*I'm sure I've read that 1.6 and 1.9 springs are slightly different. If not that, then it was that Pug changed the spec a few years in to production, possibly when the 1.9 was released.

there's 11 different springs listed for the Injected P2 205 (that's not inc the diesels or any carb versions!!), but there isn't any indication of what they'd be fitted to apart from the refference to the paint marks.

Bloody Peugeots! Was actually keen to get a response to this myself as I fancy replacing mine in the near future.

By the way Larneman, who's your Pug dealer as they sound a tiny bit useless. I use Regency in Newtownards and they can't do enough for me, the parts manager even give me a set of Mintex pads she had on her old 1.6!
