How Do I Read The Fault Codes Without A Fault Code Reader?

Recommended Posts

I'm sure I've read somewhere that I can read the fault code's from a PSA ecu by earthing a pin of the Diagnostic plug, does anyone know how?

anyone?

I've read this about the ABS system, and I'm sure this is similar to the sequence for the engine management code reading, just replace references to ABS with Engine management?

1: locate the grey 2 pin connector in the engine fuse housing next to the O/S upper engine mount.

2:Take a peice of wire long enough to reach into the car.

3: turn on the ignition

4: Put the wire into the terminal of the 2 pin connector (only one has a terminal)

5:Sitting in the car, touch the wire to earth for a second.

6:The abs light will flash, count the flashes, this indicates the code.

I.e: code twelve would read. 1 flash, pause, then 2 further flashes.

code 12 is the start code and code 11 is the end code anything in between is a fault code.

It must be how that Draper tool works. It is only about £12 from ebay IIRC

That´s the way - do you need the explanation of the codes as well?

if you have them that would be great, I have the instruction sheet for a Gunson tester (thanks graham), but its a scanned PDF and not legible all the way through.

is this for your gti6 zx welshpug? i would imagine that a gti6 would be early obd so those gunsons ones wont work.

The plug you need for this tester is green and close to the ecu connector.

My very early gti6 has one but didnt have the obd plug that most gti6s have, dunno if these cars also have the green plug. I can look tho.

the reason behind the topic is my ZX with 6 power, but I suppose it applies to any other pug that can be diagnosed in this way.

what my thoughts were that I could wire up the 98 ecu like they did on the earlier cars (i.e 2 pin green plug) the wire numbers are the same, as are the ECU's.

if not I'll have to find an OBD style plug to wire in!!

the plug in later 306's certainly is OBD shaped, and an OBD tool will plug in but wont read anything off the ecu, so I'm a bit baffled as to what it is!

I have read that the 'obd' port on phase 2 306's is not obd compatible. I think legislation introduced for european cars was starting to roll out the obd standard at about this time and peugeot tried to comply with the 306, they implemented the new plug but the software was not compatible and you need specific software not general obd stuff to access it through this interface.

yeah, I think I'll ask a dealer exactly what their fitters use!

I do have a PSA specialist 200 yards from home, but they're closed when I go to work and closed when I get home, and they don't do Saturdays, I want a job there!!!
