Pugnut 9 1 Cars Posted November 28, 2007 suplimentary air device . On cold startup the engine temp sensor provides the extra fuel while the SAD bypasses the throttlebody to supply extra metered air directly to the inlet manifold . It sits under the distributor with 2x 1" (approx diameter) hoses . one from before the throttle body and one that goes back to the underside of the inlet manifold. 12v is fed to the sad from the ignition (injector +12v to be precise) which is used to heat a bimetallic strip and close the flap after a minute or two running. welshpug 1,657 Posted November 28, 2007 in addition to what Pugnut mentioned re-12v power supplied through the bimetallic spring, the SAD is bolted to the thermostat housing and heat transfers to the spring, so if the car is used straight away and heats up quicker the SAD will close quicker than it would with just the 12v supply. GLPoomobile 958 Posted November 28, 2007 SAD is Seasonal Affective Disorder and is extremely common amongst 205 GTI owners. At this time of year we all suffer from dodgy starters, poor idle, and damp/flooded interiors, and hence we all become miserable. That is the true meaning of SAD in a 205 GTI context
