Quick Head Bolt Change Question!

Recommended Posts

Rob Turbo

When I rebuilt my 2.0 8v turbo engine I used the old head bolts but soon after thought better of it and I've now bought some new bolts, the engine hasn't done anything since I rebuilt it, just sat in the shed while I gather the rest of the bits I need, so would I be able to change the head bolts without fitting a new head gasket again?

I'm thinking if I take one bolt out at a time then put a new one in and torque it down properly it should be ok?

Thanks,

Rob

I don't see why not but I wouldn't take out one bolt at a time. I'm assuming there is a good reason for the tightening sequence and removing a bolt doesn't sound great given the care taken in sequencing the tightening.

P.S. Good choice, re-using head bolts isn't a good idea.

So will it be ok to remove all the bolts at once to replace them? I thought this would disturb the gasket and cause problems, with them being compressed?

Thanks,

Rob

can't see why it would be a problem in all fairness, its not like the gasket has been put under normal operational strain, its been compressed, but other than that, nothing.

imo for what a gasket costs its best not to take the risk. there is a sequence for removal AND refitting of the headbolts and there tightened in that sequence in order for the head to go down straight. if there not, theres a chance the head can twist.
