Help With Cooling System Please

Recommended Posts

Guest chrismk

Hi all

just fitted a new radiator after the old one blew up, also fitted a new radiator cooling fan switch in radiator and a new resistor to as the radiator fans were not working. i also fitted a new thermostat.

i've refilled the cooling system and now the car gets hot, i get hot air from the fans in the car, but the radiator does not seem to get hot. the bottom hose is warm and the side of the radiator nearest to the bottom hose gets warm but the rest of the radiator and the top hose don't.

i,ve ran the car and opened up the bleed screw on the pipe from bulkhead, squezed all the hoses with the expansion cap off to see if any air comes out and i cant see any escaping.

the temperature guage in the car is rising it gets to half and the radiator fans dont come on so not sure if they are working or not i dont want to let the car get any hotter. what point are the radiator fans supposed to come on???

also ive noticed that above the thermostat cover there is a pipe it appears to be sealed but i noticed very small amounts of water coming out, not noticed this before so not sure if its normal. ive attached a picture of the pipe below.

i think ive probably got air trapped somewhere in the system but any advice you guys can give would be great.

thanks

Chris

I would have thought the thermostat would open around halfway on the gauge. The fans dont cut in till about 3/4 up the gauge.

Maybe take the thermostat back out and test it in boiling water.

I'm sure that pipe goes to the throttle body.

so if it is the bleed screw and its snapped off, what should i do? its always been like that and i've never noticed water coming out of it before.

what about the radiator only getting hot on the bottom hose side? does this side generally get hot first? or is it down to air in the system?

any help really appreciated

thanks

Chris

It is a bleed point & it has snapped off. About the only way to fix it is take the thermostat housing off & carefully drill the old plastic screw out before replacing it with a brass one or a normal M6 bolt.

Is the thermostat opening? If your not sure you'd be best to take it out & check it in a pan of vbboiling water imo.

The lower hose still gets warmed by the water circulating round the block with the thermostat closed so it will become gradually warmer by heat expansion.

Graham.

Sounds like a duff stat to me, that is what will stop water entering the top hose. Most of those bleed screws have snapped off and I'm not aware of it causing anyone a problem
