Oil Pressure Low

Recommended Posts

Rally Slag

my 309 gti has slowly dropped oil pressure over the past year, when i got the car once it had warmed up, the oil pressure was just around half or slightly over the half way mark on the gauge when driving above 3500rpm. Now at the same oil temps and driving rpm the gauge is sitting under the half way mark, deffanatly noticable in the past couple of weeks. Thing is though, if the gauge wasnt there i wouldnt have noticed at all, there is no strange noises from the engine, it still pulls very well, drives exactly the same as before. I though mayby the oil needed changing cause it had been 6000 miles since the last change so i changed it, the oil was black as to be expected but it wasnt lumpy or anything and there was not crap in it. Is this something i should be worried about? I dont really have the time to pull the engine out and rebuild it but over 1 weekend i could drop the sump and replace the big end bearings quite easily, could even get half the main bearing off but not 100% sure if i would be able to get the top half of the main bearing out. Anyone else done this or would they not advise it. I've done it on customers old s*ity fords before but this is my own car lol :D I dont think its anything to do with the top half of the engine and its on 96,000 miles, and never been appart, not even head off before by looks of it but runs lovely still. Just dont want it to blow up because i need the car.

Cheers

Try a decent oil pressure gauge on it before you come to any conclusions...

Has your engine got a key on the oil pump( sum have not ) Check the bolt on the timing belt end 22mm spanner i think,as well as keeping the timing belt and stuff on it gives you your friction fit for the oil pump.

what you mean check the bottom pulley bolt is tight? i doubt it will be loose though. The oil pressure when cold is still pretty good, just once its warmed up its lower so i dont think its the sender unit at fault. Not really to sure wots wrong with, i just dont have the money at the moment or to be honest the time to pull it appart but i dont want it to go bang
