How Much To Install Mechanical Handbrake

Recommended Posts

Guest chris_c201

Guys,

Looking at a car that had a hydraulic upright handbrake, how much (ballpark) do you think it would be to install a standard handbrake so i could get it MOT'd? For info it runs a 309 rear beam,

Also, is a car with buckets and harnesses ok for MOT?

Cheers,

Chris

If you go to the right MOT centre a hyd handbrake won't be a problem :) but i'd just fit a standard lever and cables as its always good to have a mech back up just in case....as i've found out

Buckets and harnesses shouldn't be a problem as long as they are well fitted and all the mounts are secure....you see some really nasty fitting seats and belts on track day cars that would never pass an MOT or scruiteneering.

i know of a lad who runs a rally prepped 205 gti, and he has a hydraulic handbrake.

all he does when taking his car for m.o.t, is adjust the bias valve, to get his rear brake braking sufficiently.

and as 'chris h' says, as long as bucket seats and harnesses are mounted securely, you shouldn't have a problem

technically you still need a mechanical handbrake for MOT, but as Chris says if you can find a 'friendly' tester you maye be ok, or fit a std handbrake for the mot, isn't difficult.

My HH has a cable attachment on it still, so u can tighten the cables back up to it for Mot, and disconnect them when you don't want them, excellent idea. :)

So all in it shouldn't put me off a car, how much do you reckon for cable, lever and installation... budget about £250? Would i need a seperate caliper?

I'm going to see the car today so will have a better idea of what is actually there after that.....

My mate who does MOT's says if the handbrake locked in place, ie as a parking brake it would be fine but as its the upright lever it wouldn't pass....

Cheers for the info guys.

Chris

All you have to do is hold the handbreak back. drill a small hole so you can put a pin through or you could just but a bungy (spelling) cord around the top. As for your budget £20 should do it all you should have to do is get the right cable drum or disc.
