1.6 gti not even cranking. funny 'escaping air' noise but nothing else. recently replaced the ignition live cable connector to starter motor due to corroded and poor connection. car still showing symptoms as before.

not cranking. cant hear solenoid clicking. funny 'escaping air' like noise (cannot source)

have to jump start the poor thing to get it going, very lumpy idle, have to hold revs to get rid. almost like a misfire, then it sorts its self out.

got a re con'd starter motor on hand so will be most probably replacing the little sucker.

any body got any idea's as to why its doing it and what will cure it??

much love A2TheA

Jump start or bump start if you can jump start it (with jump leads) its your battery thats at fault. If you have to bump start it (push it and dump the clutch) have a look at the "brown multyplug" i think it is the blue wire that goes to the solenoid.

Have you accidentally knocked the solenoid wire off when you replaced the positive cable?

The escaping air type noise could be the fuel pump running & fuel running round through the lines.

Have you tested the battery to see it hasn't died? If jump starting works then forget about the above & try a known good battery.

I've got a battery downstairs that show good 13v charge but won't crank the engine over but with a jump start work first turn of the key.

Graham.

"Have you accidentally knocked the solenoid wire off when you replaced the positive cable?" This haas happened to me once or twice and made a huming noise but didnt crank over so definately check this one.

hi, all fixed now. when i replaced the connector, the terminal on the starter was all corroded and the smaller part of the tab was missing. i have replaced the startermotor and everything is ok. starts fine and even cranks quieter.

used the haynes manual as you do but didnt want to take the inlet manifold off to get to the bracket. we managed to get to the top on and undo it but the bottom one was seized therefore some brute force was needed to move the bracket.

its all back together and back to normal.

cheers for the help.
