Engine Bay Cleaning

Hi guys,

 

Ok, so i'm a little bit anal when it comes to how clean cars are!! The missus's 205s engine bay is pretty filthy! Lots of random oil / gunk and not looking that great.

 

Was thinking of covering;

 

Spark plugs, afm, dizzy cap, battery, alternator and any sensors I can see with tin foil.

 

Then was going to spray some autoglym engine cleaner in the worst areas and use a brush to get rid of most of the crap. Then maybe run some water over from a bottle (so low pressure)? Maybe finishing off by coating the rubbers with autoglym rubber and vinyel care.

 

Am I just asking for trouble with these older cars, anyone done this?

good plan, though you might find that you simply cant get some of it shifted without a steam clean.

Yea, i'm guessing some of it simply won't come off due to the amount of time it's been on there!

 

Just worried that i'll end up messing a sensor / plug up somewhere and causing more trouble than it's worth ha!

I just jet wash the hole bay without covering anything they just give the plug holes a blast out with some compressed air, Never had a problem and 95% of the time they fire up without missing a beat

Astonish engine cleaner is great and only a £1.00 from a local bargin shop, beat's gunk etc hands down.

Maybe finishing off by coating the rubbers with autoglym rubber and vinyel care.

 

Yeah, the AG Vinyl and Rubber care is great for the engine bay. Just spray it liberally over all the plastic and rubber pipes and then just leave it to dry. No need to remove the surplus, the heat from the engine will take care of that

I've found Cillit Bang is really good for cleaning up engine bays, i normally wash it off with the engine running so there is some heat to dry up the water as it lands.
