Trick 1 Posted November 11, 2007 Had an oil leak appear on the mi, couldnt work out where....finally noticed that it is coming out the sump in between the seal. My engine was rebuilt by 205parts and since it came out of their place i have covered a measly 1775 miles in 12 months. Surely the seal shouldnt just go like that after such a few number of miles? what is the normal seal - is it a compound seal or a pattern gasket? Im worried now in case ive incurred any engine damage? the oil level seems ok, and ive never let it go lower that 3/4. My engine bay is a complete mess now, so much for having it repainted. Miles 331 1 Cars Posted November 11, 2007 If a sump gasket was used then it does need to be nipped up a good 3 or 4 time within the first 1000 miles or so as the gasket beds in, But I always use sealent on mine and 99% of the time this is good, Only when a baffle plate is used you might get a seap but the surfaces are rarely flat which doesn;t help at all Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Alastairh 47 Posted November 25, 2007 Trick, these things happen mate, just the joys of owning a old car. Drop the sump, with a razor blade, clean all the gasket off the bottom of the block and sump. Halford sell good sealent at £8 a tube that i've used on my brothers almeras sump, just re seal it, torque the bolts up and you'll be fine. Engine should be ok. Give me a pm if you want a hand. Dream Weaver 2 Posted November 25, 2007 I did mine last weekend, and used Loctite 5920, though 598 is also OK. The Wurth black stuff is supposed to be good as well - just don't do what I did and apply the sealant to the spacer plate and then have to juggle the spacer passed the oil pump while full of sealant!
