Nearly Got Whipped By A Corolla!

Recommended Posts

Guest si-gti

My 1.6 205 doesnt seem to be boasting as much power as it should, my mate nearly took me in his bog standard corolla 1.4. 1st and 2nd gear feel ok but then into 3rd it feels horrible, any suggestions? Its due a timing belt change, would this be anything to do with it? I take it i should be able to whip a corollas ass :)

is the timing set right?

they can be sluggish and slow if the distributor has issues.

I went with a friend to buy a 1.6gti 205 and it was very slow in the upper rev range. The buyer said thats how they were meant to be - but he was being very evasive!

I spotted what I assume to be the vacuum advance tubing was split going in to the distributor. Bought a new piece of tube and it worked perfectly afterwards. Have a look on your car, if its gone in the same way as my mates then its the best bit of performance 'tuning' per pound that you will ever do!

A good 1.6 should pull hard all the way to the limiter and be itching to go past it!

yup. my 1.6 lump used to batter the limiter as well. if the vacuum advance tube is leaking, at high RPM the ignition timing will be retarded, and get worse the higher you rev it.

my old 1.6 pulled really hard until the limiter. i would take a look at the mechanical advance inside the distibuter. if it seizes they become really lazy too rev.

The reality is 1600 GTI's are that fast compared to modern day cars.

My Mum use to have a 1.4 VVTI Corrolla 02 plate. Up set a few quick silvers and VTR's in that :)

Just get it serviced and setup properly on a emissions machine and enjoy the revving B)
