How Do You Get The Gear Rods To Pop Off The Gearbox?

Recommended Posts

How do you get the gear rods to pop off the gearbox-

I used some pliers on them but they refused to budge, I presume there is a recognised way to do it?

Thanks, Anton

EITHER A LEVER BAR, OR A SPANNER IS EASIEST :)

depends what type you have, if you have original rods they just pull off with lever bar/screw driver but if you have the same type as mine you need to find the little clip that stops them just falling off

dont think you'll have rose jointed ones?

Standard pug rods AFAIK.. with the ball etc

Tried levering them today, they didn't really want to know though -You suggest attacking them harder then? :)

14mm spanner works nicely on the rods at the gearbox end IIRC.

Or a small screwdriver under the balljoint as Ingy showed me!

Exactly what i use. Less likely to bend them like a screw driver :)

Either a 10mm or 13mm spanner and give them a very hard turn, Or a lever to pull them off much like a ball joint splitter

spanner

Yep, the spanners did it. I grabbed the nearest spanner to hand which was a 15 and they twist/lever off reasonably simply with that.

Cheers all

I found this Sunday that the best way was to pull up alongside a brand-new BMW M3 at the traffic lights on the South Mimms M25 roundabout, look at the driver to see if he's up for a little drag and then after hitting max revs in first pull back hard on the gearstick.

Cue permanent neutral and a nice red-faced coast across and up the kerb.

I'd have had 'im otherwise B)

I only fitted new OEM rods 5k ago :(

Ha ha ha, you're getting too old for this s*it Ian B) That's why I'm not into traffic light grand prix, cos you look a complete melon if something goes wrong

Time for a PM to Miles though I think (I just got a new set of rods off him the other week).
