Strange Noise When Braking

on my E reg 1.6 gti, i'm aware of the drivers side trackrod end being worn, causing the drivers front wheel to be able to wobble from left to right. but i do notice after around 50mph it tends to wander all over the road, and when braking the drivers side front has started making a nasty clicking sound, with the car behaving like it has warped discs, sort of a quick on and off feeling, however the pedal doesn't pulsate.

 

is the trackrod end causing all this, or should i be checking other things?

This might sound stupid but your wheel bolts are on tight aren't they? I had the same problem ages ago and it was loose wheel bolts. Worth a check

yea i checked, i too have had the embarrassing problem of head scratching over it, then eventually going to a garage and it turned out to be loose wheel bolts, i had to hang my head in shame!
