Spiky 37 Posted October 29, 2007 what sort fo speeds will i get in each gear with the above config, with a 7500 limit
Sandy 191 Posted October 29, 2007 On 195/50/15s (max speed/rpm after change from previous gear) 1st 34.6mph 2nd 60.7mph/4267rpm 3rd 84.1mph/5420rpm 4th 106.9mph/5895rpm 5th 132.2/6069rpm Personally I think the 1.9/4.4 combo is better for the closer 1st to 2nd gear: 1st 39.1mph 2nd 61.8mph/4752rpm 3rd 84.1mph/5514rpm 4th 106.9mph/5895rpm 5th 132.2/6069rpm But for general road track use, the Mi16 box as it comes is my favourite: 1st 39.1mph 2nd 61.8mph/4752rpm 3rd 89.1mph/5189rpm 4th 118.8mph/5625rpm 5th 152.1/5859rpm
Spiky 37 Posted October 29, 2007 hi sandy, thanks for the detailed reply, so basically only 1st and 2nd gear is the difference between the 1.6 and 1.9???? mmmm as my car is a track car, thats no benfit at all for me.... and as you say it might be better keeping the 1.9 if i bought a 1.6 box for 4.41 final drive, can i fit that into the 1.9 easy???? (read give to someone who knows what they are doing) thanks again
SPGTi 2 Posted October 29, 2007 Spiky I don't know whether I am reading your reply correct but I think you are getting a bit confused. Sandy gave you the figures for a 1.6 box with 4.4CWP and a 1.9 box with 4.4 CWP. The 4.4 CWP is from the MI16 box. Their is a link to a spread sheet that gives you all the info you need somewhere (I am sure someone will post it soon). Steve
Spiky 37 Posted October 29, 2007 yeah i think i read it right, but i know for a 1.6 box with 4.41 drive and LSD fitted, i have 1no 1.6 box and 2 1.9 box's in my garage, so can mix and match to get the best result hope that clears that up sorry for the confusion
Anulfo 22 Posted October 29, 2007 Wow bizarre!!! 4th gear 118.8mph and 5th gear 152.1mph!!!!Thats some drop in revs surely????
Sandy 191 Posted October 29, 2007 If you can do 118mph in 4th, you won't be using 5th on the track often, or for more than a moment. In case there is any confusion here, the 1.6 box has a 4.06 final drive as standard and the 1.9 box has 3.68 final drive.

Matt Holley 11 Posted October 30, 2007 Spiky, I use an mi box with my gti6 and it is a huge improvment on the 1.9 box, I would recomend it I would be interested to see how the 1.9/4.4 combo compares as I nearly did this but an mi box came up with an atb diff already fitted
Spiky 37 Posted October 30, 2007 so matt, what ya thoughts on 1.6/4.41 combo???
welshpug 1,661 Posted October 30, 2007 On 195/50/15s (max speed/rpm after change from previous gear) But for general road track use, the Mi16 box as it comes is my favourite: 1st 39.1mph 2nd 61.8mph/4752rpm 3rd 89.1mph/5189rpm 4th 118.8mph/5625rpm 5th 152.1/5859rpm oh my word, they are interesting to see as this is essentially the combo in my ZX and it should have 55's on it! Matt Holley 11 Posted October 31, 2007 so matt, what ya thoughts on 1.6/4.41 combo??? Looks o.k to me, the 1st gear is a tad short but how often are you going to be using that on track. If you have the bits already and dont mind it screaming a bit more on the motorway then go for it
Dj_mini 7 Posted October 31, 2007 Iv got 1.6 box with an mi 4.4 and i can nearly touch the limter (8000rpm) in 5th at combe so for the little time iv diven the car iv found it very good but for future use possibly hill climbing im going to fit the 1.9 1st as the drop in revs between gear changes is better. Spiky 37 Posted January 15, 2008 sorry to bring this back up, i've just entered some details into a spread sheet 1.6 box 1.6 box with 4.41 1.9 box so looking at that, i will max out 5th at 130 or 140 depending what FD i use with a 1.6 box i currently have fitted a 1.6 box with std FD with quaife, my next questions, how hard to swap the FD over for a 4.41?
SPGTi 2 Posted January 16, 2008 You need to change the FD and the pinion. Here is a guide CWP change Steve
Spiky 37 Posted January 16, 2008 thanks for that, much appreciated though been chatting with a mate and i think a 1.6 bx with mi FD may drasticaly reduce my top speed and find myslef flat out in 5th on track so will see how i get on, and if i feel i need to change it i will. will see what speeds i can pull at bedford in a few weeks
Spiky 37 Posted January 16, 2008 just looked at that link WOW, great detail, but dont look easy..lol well not "that" hard but, but i may not take that on
James_R 3 Posted January 16, 2008 There's not too many tracks you'll find yourself flat out on with 130-135 up your sleave, and then you have to conisider do you gain time by running out of gearing for a couple of seconds and not getting a couple more mph peak, and then gain better accelerations over the rest of the track, to improve your area under the curve and a faster lap time. Although on trackdays it's pretty subjective. But I doubt you'd run out of gears at llandow with that. I'm swapping to a 4.4 this year as I'm finding the 1.9/1.6 combo too long for UK circuits, although it's spot on for the ring.
Spiky 37 Posted January 16, 2008 ok cool,# think i'll just keep the 1.6 box for now and see how it goes, bedford will be a good test and i can also see what the new gear ratios will be like
James_R 3 Posted January 17, 2008 you will run out of gearing there, the main straight is so the porsches and things can take off
Spiky 37 Posted January 17, 2008 well there ius a few porka's going so should be fun
Garry 1 Posted January 17, 2008 So what box are you running, Spiky? 1.6 with mi FD?
Spiky 37 Posted January 17, 2008 no, 1.6 box with 1.6 FD
snillet 1 Posted January 18, 2008 I had a box from a BX16TZI "laying around" that i did put together with the Ethanol engine i have in my car. The rations is as follows: 1: 3.454 2: 1.85 3: 1.28 4: 0.9696 5: 0.757 FD: 4.188 In reality same as Mi16 box but with larger span between 1-2 and a less revvier FD. I can see when driving that starting from standstill the difference between 1-2 is a bit to big, but 1:st gear is really nice when sitting in traffic jams and you can just let the car tick slowly forward on idlespeed in 1:st gear, so i think it´s a keeper for me right now anyways since it´s both daily driver and trackcar. I DO however really like the combo of the rest of the gears and the FD, have drive 205:s and 309:s with the Mi16 box before and as a daily driver that is just a "tad" to revvy at motorway speeds. petert 588 Posted January 18, 2008 (edited) Mi16x4's also had the 3.454:1 1st gear. It's unbearably short when coupled with a 4.43:1 diff, giving a huge gap between 1st and 2nd. Your overall 1st is 14.46 (3.454 x 4.188) Mi16x4 overall 1st is 15.3 (3.454 x 4.43) Mi16 overall 1st is 12.9 (2.92 x 4.43) My son runs a 3.25:1 1st in his Mi16. The 1st to 2nd gap is fine with the 4.43 diff. Edited January 18, 2008 by petert
