I just used some bolts of the suitable diameter (I've been taught not to use drill bits, as they snap not bend...)

for Mi16 engines and diesel ones I just use the tools in the Franklin kit I bought some 5 years ago now, best £25 odd I spent as it fits VW rover volvo and the majority of PSA engines (older ones, it doesn't have later XU cam pins, but I've made those)

my friend Richard has made several Ford tools, which happen to fit loads of different engines, one tool even fitted a renault diesel engine!

I bought a xu dowel set off ebay a few years ago for £10-£15 or something.

Came with several different sized dowels in pairs so can lock the cams in place properly. The tensioner tool looks similar to your second picture. Theres a hole in the end that you attach a 1kg weight to. When its in the tensioner with the 1kg weight it pulls roughly the right amount of tension into the belt. If its any use I can measure the hole distance from the pivot point.

yes Bam thats the exact kit, no dowels to fit the latrer XU pullies though, there is another kit that does cover them but the dowels are just 6mm dia rod IIRC.

I have both of the top two pics shown above. Only the black one fits a gti6 tensioner, the silver one is too small.

I've got a Franklin kit for my diesel & another kit for the Mi but the crank lock doesn't fit properly on the Mi so I used the flywheel lock to hold it while I swap the belt.

I use a sump plug key for the Mi tensioners but before that I used a modded 8mm allen key & a 3/8" short extension for on the diesel tensioner.
