Bam 0 Posted October 28, 2007 hi, any 16v driver knows the problem -changing timing belt. i'm interessted, wich (selfmade) tools do you use for the timing belt tensioner? i've attached two pictures -know its your turn, show me yours please. also, how do you fix the camshaft sprocket? (drill?) or like this one below? cheers, mik
welshpug 1,657 Posted October 28, 2007 I just used some bolts of the suitable diameter (I've been taught not to use drill bits, as they snap not bend...) for Mi16 engines and diesel ones I just use the tools in the Franklin kit I bought some 5 years ago now, best £25 odd I spent as it fits VW rover volvo and the majority of PSA engines (older ones, it doesn't have later XU cam pins, but I've made those) my friend Richard has made several Ford tools, which happen to fit loads of different engines, one tool even fitted a renault diesel engine! 16v205 9 Posted October 28, 2007 I bought a xu dowel set off ebay a few years ago for £10-£15 or something. Came with several different sized dowels in pairs so can lock the cams in place properly. The tensioner tool looks similar to your second picture. Theres a hole in the end that you attach a 1kg weight to. When its in the tensioner with the 1kg weight it pulls roughly the right amount of tension into the belt. If its any use I can measure the hole distance from the pivot point. Bam 0 Posted October 28, 2007 @welshpug > I just use the tools in the Franklin kit ... do you mean this? @rich >I bought a xu dowel set off ebay a few years ago for £10-£15 or something. arg... on 3rd and 4th pictures.. this tool cost around 150€! why you have all so much luck? > When its in the tensioner with the 1kg weight it pulls roughly the right amount of tension into the belt. -i thought it was 1,5kg? > If its any use I can measure the hole distance from the pivot point. that would be nice. how long is this tool? mik

welshpug 1,657 Posted October 28, 2007 yes Bam thats the exact kit, no dowels to fit the latrer XU pullies though, there is another kit that does cover them but the dowels are just 6mm dia rod IIRC.
BuD 0 Posted October 28, 2007 I have both of the top two pics shown above. Only the black one fits a gti6 tensioner, the silver one is too small.
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted October 30, 2007 I've got a Franklin kit for my diesel & another kit for the Mi but the crank lock doesn't fit properly on the Mi so I used the flywheel lock to hold it while I swap the belt. I use a sump plug key for the Mi tensioners but before that I used a modded 8mm allen key & a 3/8" short extension for on the diesel tensioner. Graham. Rich Have'nt had chance to get back to my parents to measure the tensioner tool, been filling holes and plastering our bedroom instead. As soon as i get 5 mins ill pop back and pm the measurements to you. Rich
