Easiest Way To Check/set Proper Ignition Timing

Recommended Posts

Ethos

Hi all,

Steve and me (Well Steve) changed the timing on the 205, now suspect the ignition timing is out.

What is the easiest way to check or set it to the correct timing? I'm fairly limited knowledge wise

I heard turning it until it starts pinking then back it off a bit, but which way you would turn it... if you're looking at it from the passengers wing would you turn it clockwise or anticlock wise, Safe to do so?

What would happen if the ignition timing was out?

I'd like to give it a go myself to obviously save money but if we took it to an oldschool garage what sort of price would they charge?

Thanks guys!

I find it very hard to hear pinking at idle so I adjust the advance until the engine revs stop rising.

Pinking sounds vaguely like someone banging spoons together.

Well, after changing the oil last night me and buddy thought we'd try to sort the ignition timing out.

We went out for a drive armed with a socket set and gtech. Advanced it some then did a gtech run etc... did 3-4 runs until we got the best bhp / running. Heard some pinking with only some minor advancement (the dizzy was roughly in the middle). If you backed off the timing we got better bhp but less torque. So running roughly in the middle seemed to be the best place for bhp/torque and times :)

Awesome! Bhp is up 30bhp from when we first got it from tweaking, she's running soooooooo much nicer.

Just got to keep an eye on those drops of oil from the 10w/40 now!
