Mi16 Stalling When Coming Off The Throttle

Recommended Posts

Hiya,

starting to get a bit dispondent on this one as combined with the lovely hot start issue, its not a very useful car at the moment...

SO.. it stalls when its cold when on medium throttle and you suddenly lift to shift or brake then dip the clutch, or blip it at the lights and it dies, smells of fuel. It's not misfiring, its not loosing power that i can tell, once warm it will only try to die if your on a blast and then lift, slowing quickly while braking then dip the clutch. It will start and fire immediately (assuming the hot start issue of no starter doesn't happen) after its stalled.

its worse when its cold ambient air temperature, its worse still when its moist air / wet / mist.

Removed the afm and started it sans afm, started and ran but didn't stall, i'm guessing that either means the ICV is ok.. please correct.

changed fairly recently

The copper and blue plug temp sensor ( 8 months ago)

Plugs (8 months ago)

Leads ( 4 months ago)

Dizzy cap ( 2 months ago)

Rotor (2 months ago)

checked so far

Retracked AFM (which actually made the car more jumpy when going on the throttle) last week, moved the board itself rather than bending the arm. resealed it too.

ICV is free of mayo and appeared to help the car not stall when it was running sans afm.

The air temp sensor in the afm looked a tad bent.. the flap looked fairly free moving, may give it some WD to help the armature if thats also advised.

i'd be willing to look at some other components if people think they would need replacing, but this feels more like the car is unable to cope with sudden changes in air flow, and spanks up the fuelling then dies. I'm fairly sure it must be the AFM but need another known good one to test..

any advice or spare motronic AFM's would be very warmly welcomed.

cheers

Justin.

My amateur and poorly educated reply is a) what's the throttle body like, and b.) what's the spring tension like in the AFM?

I know that worn Mi16 TBs can cause a dodgy idle and I'm sure it has been mentioned in conjunction with similar symptoms to yours, but I could be wrong. And I mention the flap spring tension cos I had similar-ish symptoms to you when my AFM died due to the flap loosing all tension and also sticking open. The flap should spring back to closed with a satisfying strong clunk!
