Starter Motor Earth Cable/strap/wire

Recommended Posts

when i got my opug in january i knew i had to replace/repair the starter motor eath. without it she doesnt crank i found out lol. the connector ha totally corroded so there is high resistance at that point which is preventing the starter motor from spinningup and engaging.

am i right in thinking if i clean up the terminal on the starter motor )(this has a little surface rust on it, nothing mega) i can cut the connector off of the earth wire and then stripe the wire back and crimp or attach a new connector onto the end?

is there enough wire before i go hacking things apart, is it easy enough to do, will it work, and any alternatives?

are you talking about the one thats bolted to the top of the gearbox below the distributor. If so then it just goes direct to the battery negative terminal. You should have enough wire to strip it back but if there isn't then it would be a simple job to just replace the whole wire

erm, there is no earth on teh starter motor, it grounds out through its casing to the gearbox.

The only 2 connections are a permenant 12v (chunky wire) going to the starter motor and thats what cranks the motor. The smaller guage wire is a switched live from the ignition barrel and it goes to the solenoid, and this just engages the ring gear and at the same time triggers the motor to start cranking.

If you are on about the switched live then yes you can run a complete new wire (i have recently done this myself) which i spliced into the loom under the dash and continued through the bulkhead, along the side of the engine bay accros the slam panel and down to the solenoid with a new connector (pack of 10 is £1.50 from maplin) crimped onto it.

hope this helps
