205 1.9 How Should It Run ?.

Recommended Posts

Guest pughardtop

Hi to all. This is my first posting. I have just finished restoring my 205 1.9 GTi and am not sure if it is worth getting the engine tuned or not, as I have heard of instances where things have gotten worse following engine tuning.

The car passed its emisions with flying colours, it starts every time but will not tickover untill it has warmed up for about one minute. Once warm the engine seems to run fine but a flat spot can be felt when setting off from junctions etc unless you rev it above 1800 rpm./ It dosent cut out at all when you stop at junctions etc and pulls well. The tickover when warm is between 1200 & 1500 rpm, as it varys. The head has been overhalled and compression tests well, oil pressure is at 3/4. All filters have been replaced also plugs, leads, dis cap , rotor etc and I have checked all vacuum pipes are ok.

I know that these engines arent 100% smooth but would appreciate it if anyone would know if mine seems to be running normaly from the above description.

Thanks for looking.

a noob to engines myself im just getting the hang of the 1.9 lump.

normaly poor tickover when cold could be the SAD, when i was having poor idle when cold i found the air pipe that runs to the SAD was cracked, i replaced it and the problem was sorted.

they also suffer from air leaks from everywhere and sometimes the AFM can play up with old age, it mite be worth looking into it.

i'd say the SAD isn't working properly and someone has wound out the idle screw to compensate if it won't idle from cold and ticks over that high. either that or you've got an air leak. with a working SAD nad no air leaks it should fire up to a high idle before settling down to a steady if vaguely lumpy tick over (mine fires up at 1500 before dropping down to a solid 1k hot or cold)

another thing to check is that the throttle pot is working (listen for a click just as the throttle opens/closes), if not the engine won't ever know teh throttle is closed, but this may have shown up in the emissions.

Thanks for the advice. Ive checked the throttle pot is working and can hear the click as it opens and closes and I have just tried to drop the idle speed when hot, managed to get it down to 1100 rpm by adjusting the screw out. I then took the car for a good run and it started to idle at 1500 rpm again, Could this variation possibly be caused by an air leak as well as the cold running problem.

Thanks again, Appreciated.

wrt tuning, most 1.9s will respond to igntion timing adjustment. Some are already good but many are running retarded and feel better after a bit of adjustment.
