Wiring In An Led Warning Light

Recommended Posts

GLPoomobile

I've got a cheapo red LED (not the flashing type as used for alarms, but an on or off type) that I want to connect to my Oil Pressure warning switch in addition to the standard warning light. As I'm redoing my loom I'll be connecting the original wire on the sensor loom to the pressure switch using a piggy back spade terminal, so I'll have a 2nd male spade coming off the switch that I can connect a wire to and run to the LED.

Am I right in thinking that the wire from the LED to the switch should be negative, and I should connect the other wire from the LED to a switched live?

Steve, you are right the wire to the presure switch should be the negative one.

Is the LED a 12 volt one? i.e. does it have any current limiting built in?

If it is just a normal led then it will need to have a current limiting resitor wired in series with it. If this is the case, then if you have the current requirement for the LED in mA, and the voltage drop across the LED then we should be able to work out a resistor value for you ;) Or just get a 12V one as above :)

It says it's a 12v one. That's a relief cos you've just hurt my head! ;)

It's the one about half way down this page from VWP, ref:LED607

:) Yeah, you'll be fine with that one. All the work is done for you.

I've got about 8 or 9 leds wired directly to the stop light bulb on the back of the clocks, leds use very little power compared to bulbs so the extra load isn't an issue.

Do you have them all mounted in different spots so it lights up like a christmas tree every time you take a fast right hander?

They are all part of what was once a high level brake light. I took it off the rear spoiler when I bought the car and when I took it on track it seemed a good idea to glue it to the dashboard...
