Oil Filler Tub Things

Recommended Posts

McPikie

I was having a look at my engine lastnight and noticed on the oil filler, the cap doesnt fit "just right" and seems a bit slack. Then I noticed the hose at the back of it (if looking form then front of the car), that goes down past the inlet somewhere, wasnt fitting properly and has basically been cut with a knife, forced on and taped up.

It looked like a standard pug hose, so what's the crack??

It probably was 'the crack' literally! Guess the hose was split and they just cut the damaged section off. The cap does get slack over the years so if the hose doesn't fit properly then it won't be helping the situation.

How can you write "what's the crack" next to that avatar? Should be damn obvious! :P:o:(

lol

So, GL, does the standard hose have a "bigger bit" on the end to go over the plastic bit?

I think I need to get some pics eh?

I can't remember actually. I have a terrible memory and really need to see things first hand. If Graham was here I bet he would have a pic to upload ;) . It could be that someone has just replaced it with a random spare hose.

Get a pic.

I've got this pic.....

So on he cap you have one long thin hose going to the top of the throttle body amd another shorter fat hose going to the induction hose. Then at the bottom of the filler body (the big bit the cap slots into) you have a big fat pipe that goes down to the bottom of the block. There's no other's are there? Which one are you taking about?

The short fat one looks like it is more bulbous where it has been pushed on to the cap.

IIRC there's a mid-sized pipe to the rear of the filler neck that goes to the block as part of the vent system. These, along with the main filler pipe at the bottom often perish and are horrendous money from pug, so will often get shortened and re-used. Again, usually flared at the end to fit the filler neck. If the filler cap is loose, are there still 2 rubber o-rings fitted as these often split and get discarded too.

When that hose went on my car I just went to my local motor factors and got a length of hose the correct diameter to fit as it's only a breather

The hose that runs from the back of the filler neck goes to the bottom of the block next to the main oil filler hose.

I think the hose Phil means isn't in that picture Steve but under the cap on the very back of the neck.

Item #3 in the picture attached.

Yeah I remembered that pipe around about the time that Steve posted his reply, just couldn't picture it before as my memory is terrible.

That pipe is really common for splitting isn't it? Usually right at the top too as it bends around. I suppose a combination of spilled oil over the years eating into the rubber, and the fact that it's bent just makes it fail sooner than most of the other ones.

I wouldn't say they are that common for splitting but just over general time with the age of the hoses any movement slowly causes them to crack & split.

If you take them off to clean them through that hose is mopre likely to split along the part where the jubilee clip fits to clamp it to the block causing a mysterious oil leak like mine did.

Graham.
