Replacement Exhaust Backbox For Magnex System

Recommended Posts

Doof

I've got a magnex full stainles steel exhaust and ever since i went on the ring theres been this horrible rattling sound coming from the exhuast which i presume to be the baffles having given up. I'm using this chance to get something less "chavvy" so i'm thinking of having an OE backbox on the magnex system...is this possible? not sure of pipe diameters and fitments myself.

Cheers,

Lewis

hi mate the rattle is common with magnex systems i think. mine did it they have a grub screw type thing i think on the side of the tip. mine was missing so put a screw in it. when that fell out i finally just splattered some weld in there. job done. sounded so much better afterwoods

But i think i'd actually prefer a quieter box on it, any ideas on fitting a std backbox onto the current magnex system?

IIRC the magnex uses a sleeve joint, whereas the std exhaust uses a flange type fitting so they aren't compatible.

Unless you get a sleeve fitment backbox for one of the earlier 3 piece systems of course. No idea if they would match up bore wise Im afraid Doof, gonna be a case of having a measure I think. Measure your magnex system and then maybe pop down kwikFit or similar and ask if they can measure one of theyre backboxes for you ? or someone on here.

I don't think the backbox will match up. I suspect (IIRC) that the Magnex backbox joins the center section further along than a standard backbox, so you'd probably need to weld a few inches of pipe either on to the center section or the backbox.

Probably not a very expensive job to get done though.

Hmm, i'll have a measure up and see what might fit. To be honest i'm quite tempted by a mild steel "performance" one which might lose the annoying tinny sound.

Ages ago I had an Mi16 that had a mild steel exhaust with a tip that pointed down similar to the standard one, but the diameter was about 2 - 2.5 inches. I was told it was a group N one or something but could never find it. Anyone know of a group N backbox with a dropped tip in mild steel? It sounded so good.

Magnex is 50mm bore & standard (bosal) is @ 47mm, so it woul need flaring a little.

As stated, a 3 piece with a sleeved rear box would probably work. Why not go the whole hog & fit a standard throughout? I much prefer the noise to the Magnex I had on.

Mark.

Because its cold outside and i cant be bothered to go pulling the manifold off?

This is i'm hoping to put my S16 engine in next summer so dont really wanna do something that will need doing again anyway. Think i'll whip the backbox off and have a look how bad it is.
